I'm a 39-year-old mother of two active children (a boy, age 15; a girl, age 17) with a full-time career. Unfortunately, the above doesn't leave me much time for cooking during the weekdays(I must own about 5 "30-Minute Meals" cookbooks!!)! I've been cooking on my own since I was about 18 yrs old. I am self taught and would cook a big meal everyday if I had the time! I love cooking for parties, holidays and special occasions.
My favorite things to cook
If it can be grilled, I can cook it! I love cooking on my new infrared grill! Steaks, chicken, fish, veggies, pizza--you name it! I actually like to cook just about anything, and love challenging myself (and my childrens taste buds) with new recipes. I also love using the crock pot to cook things...you throw it in before you leave for work and VIOLA! When you get home, dinner is ready!!
My favorite family cooking traditions
Every Christmas Eve we get together at my sister's house where she celebrates a different culture every year. We all bring a native food of the country that they would be eating around Christmas time. We've had some very interesting Christmas Eve dinners!!
My cooking triumphs
I decided to challenge myself by making something moderately difficult (oh and did I mention--my mother's MOST favorite food??!) for a Mother's Day dinner. I chose Beef Wellington from this site. I've never even tasted it before deciding to make it. My mom said it tasted better than the restaurant she normally gets it at. And I believe her...because even my most picky children devoured it, my father was impressed and my husband was pleasantly surprised how good it tasted (I guess he didn't like what 'pate' is made from! ha ha!).
My cooking tragedies
I'd have to say my biggest food tragedy happened when I was in my early 20's. I was new to the whole making-dinner-for-more-than-myself thing and my parents were traveling 5+ hours to visit me. I thought this would be the perfect time to "wow" them with my cooking skills...boy was I wrong. We had plans to go out for the day so I figured I'd use my slow cooker, that way, when we got back, dinner would be ready! So I planned something easy, yet delicious in the slow cooker. I did everything right--planning to impress my parents--and we all went out for the day, planning on having a good dinner when we all returned. However, when we got back, I realized I forgot to turn the slow cooker ON!!!! Needless to say, we ended up dining OUT that evening!
