It's a crazy life ain't it?
About this Cook
I use food and the art of presentation as a form of communication. At times a reflection of my soul. I strive for those to feel the love or emotion I was feeling at the time of preparation & wish I had the power of the character Tita had in Laura Esquivels "Like Water for Chocolate", where her magical spells in her food manipulates those who eat her creations to feel the emotion she had when it was prepared. Of course mine would always be of love and passion and such. Wouldn't ever intentionally want to make someone ill like she did to her sister. But there are times the PMS factor can kick in and well then there is no telling what could come out of it (tee-hee!).
My favorite things to cook
Baking is my next favorite escape next to eating it.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Oh to make my beautiful northern italians grandmothers ravioli. Her amazing sauces and that apricot and pineapple jam is too decadent for words.
My cooking triumphs
German chocolate cake. A pound of butter & 8 eggs later, truly a once a year treat. Apple pie (Finally!).
My cooking tragedies
Oh, I like it that my memory doen't allow me to remember too many of these.

Oriental Sesame Slaw
Tastes like what I'd I've had in japanese restuarants. It's the sesame oil that sets this slaw apart from others. I forgot to add the honey but I did add a few splashes of mirin which is also a sweetner. Didn't have the black sesame seeds but did add sliced almonds & chopped scallion. Just "cuz I had a bit of lime that needed to be used, I added a small amount which I couldn't taste. Even the pickier eaters enjoyed.

German Potato Pancakes
We liked it. Soaked the shredded potato in cold salt water & avoided the oxidation issue. After draining well, we even blotted with a clean dish towel. Only chnage we will make next time is omit the onion & use a bit smaller pan so the oil can come up on the sides of the pancake more. Perhaps add a pinch of cayenne. Will need to add more oil after a batch or two.
