Johnny Cake

Reviewed: Oct. 11, 2008
Delicious! Very moist and sweet. I guess some people aren't looking for that particular combination in cornbread, but my husband and I gobbled it up. I used canola oil for the shortening, otherwise exactly as directed.

Mulligatawny Soup I

Reviewed: Nov. 17, 2012
Yum! Doubled it, used 3 tablespoonsful of curry powder, and used evaporated skim milk in place of cream. Awesome. Husband said I could make this again any time!!

Mama's Asian Chicken and Rice

Reviewed: Sep. 29, 2012
I used about 1/2 the amount of chicken and browned it in Pam, but left the sauce the same. It didn't thicken up for me, maybe because of not having the oil (?). It was delicous, though, and next time I won't even bother mixing in the cornstarch slurry. Only reason I changed at all was to make it more Weight Watchers friendly :) It was a hit

Sweet and Sour Beef and Cabbage

Reviewed: Sep. 20, 2012
I'm making this for the third time, and have found that the secret to taking it from good to fantastic is refrigerating it, then reheating. Makes it thicker and just brings it all together. Yummy and Weight Watcher friendly. :)

Baked Potato Casserole

Reviewed: Apr. 8, 2012
Delicious! Made a half recipe for Easter dinner. My only changes were to leave out the onions, chives, and salt. My oldest granddaughter requested it for her birthday dinner next month!

Wonderful! Reminded me of cioppino, but with Indian spices. I ate almost the whole thing myself!!

Roasted Garlic Cauliflower

Reviewed: Mar. 24, 2011
Just made this and snuck a taste as I was dishing it up. OMG!!!!! SO good. Made it exactly as written except a sprinkle of dried parsley instead of fresh. Didn't cover at all, no problem with burning. Wonderful!!!!

Fasoliyyeh Bi Z-Zayt (Syrian Green Beans with Olive Oil)

Reviewed: Mar. 19, 2011
Wow!!! Just made this for me and my husband. We gobbled down every bit and could have eaten twice as much. I used 2 tbsp olive oil and put the garlic in at the beginning rather than at the end with the cilantro. wonderful!!!!!

Old-Fashioned Cracker Dressing

Reviewed: Mar. 3, 2014
I needed to use up some matzoh crackers, and subbed them for the saltines in this recipe. Poured mushroom soup over the top, baked it, and we ate it casserole style. Yum :)

Applesauce Salad

Reviewed: Feb. 4, 2011
This is the jello salad my mother-in-law made for at least 40 years, and that I've been making for my husband every Christmas and Thanksgiving since I inherited his mom's binder of favorite recipes. He loves it (and the memories it brings) and now my grandchildren have fallen in love with it, too. It goes great with turkey!!

Turkey in a Smoker

Reviewed: Feb. 13, 2011
Incredible! I also brined the turkey before smoking it, and it took about 8 hours for a 14 pound turkey. It was moist and delicious. Everyone raved. Used apple wood. I'll do this again for sure. Even better than deep fried.

Kielbasa with Brussels Sprouts

Reviewed: Oct. 28, 2010
I also used water instead of oil and turkey kielbasa, but otherwise per recipe. It was wonderful. My husband devoured it, and I even ate about half of the brussel sprouts on my plate. Since I've never eaten more than one bite of one before, this was pretty amazing!

Key Lime Pie VII

Reviewed: Nov. 27, 2008
I made this pie for Thanksgiving, and just got back from dinner where it got rave reviews. Just delicious. Very tangy, wonderful texture. Loved it. Used fresh lime juice and made 1 1/2 times the recipe and it fit perfectly into my oversized 9.5 inch pie pan. Highly recommend.

Italian Halibut Chowder

Reviewed: Apr. 10, 2013
Yum. Used tilapia and scaled it back a little for just my husband and me. Didn't have tomato juice, so I used tomato sauce. We both really enjoyed it, and it was very Weight Watchers friendly.

Coffee Jelly

Reviewed: Sep. 29, 2012
Very tasty and easy. I don't think I got all the gelatin in the mixture, so it was a little soft, but still yummy. I'm thinking about freezing it and seeing if it's like coffee sherbet :)

Sesame Seed Oil Hummus

Reviewed: Apr. 21, 2015
Incredible, and super quick with an immersion blender. I had freshly cooked garbanzos and no tahini, and tried this. It's already gone! YUMMMM I was a little worried that the sesame oil might give it a "weird" taste, but not so. Give it a try!

Amaretto Cake

Reviewed: Feb. 13, 2011
This cake disappeared in no time and everyone requested it be made again. I used 1/4 cup amaretto and no almond extract. I also crushed some pecans and put them in the bundt pan before pouring in the batter (I had them left from various Christmas/Thanksgiving recipes) and it really took it up a notch. Fantastic recipe!

Ham Bone Soup

Reviewed: Jan. 1, 2011
WOW! I made this as written, except doubled (I had a huge, meaty ham bone left over from Christmas) and simmered all day on the stove. I wasn't sure what to expect with the simple ingredients and lack of spices, but it was WONDERFUL! My husband and I had two huge bowls apiece and have decided this will be our traditional New Year's meal from now on. FANTASTIC!! don't change a thing!
