I've been a mom of 3 boys for 21 years. I can say that an out-to-dinner night usually winds up being disappointing because I am a really good cook. I can usually do a better job with flavors and textures than what we pay for when we go out. I prefer to do it myself.
My favorite things to cook
I love to cook just about everything, but really enjoy cooking for those that appreciate GOOD FOOD. I love a hungry crowd and receive multiple compliments on the spreads I have put out over the years. I recently started to sell my "party food" trays, which is SO rewarding! Not only am I feeding people who like my foods, I am being paid to do it!
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mom was not a very good cook - my grandmother never used spices. I guess that is why I learned to cook, to use spices and really get into feeding my family foods that were never introduced to me as a child. The traditions will have to start with me and my youngest son loves cooking as much as I do!
My cooking triumphs
I think my best dish is a side dish, German Potato Salad. I have skimmed through the recipes on this site and did not find one that is comparable. I believe my version is easier to make, less ingredients and the taste is to die for. People actually attend our picnics just to get another serving!
My cooking tragedies
The worst meal ever served in my house was on purpose...every family member in my house over a span of 5 days complained about dinner. I served perfectly edible foods but because they weren't favorites of each person, there were complaints. To get even I made a Goolash - with ground beef, tomatoes, green beans, and everything I could think of to throw in the pot. I made it taste especially bad and told the family that I would serve this once a week if they didn't show a little appreciation for the meals I was serving them. ***I also reminded them that I packed their daily lunches and that they would be mortified to open that brown bag to find a single serve GOOlash!
