I dislike hangovers more than I like boozing. It's a fact that keeps me honest with my intake. Except when it doesn't. And New Year's Eve has been one of those times when circumstances, despite all best intentions, have conspired to hang one over on me. To be sure, suffering a hangover is no way to start a new year. It sets a karmically unkind tone.

Fortunately, there are precautions: drink a lot of water (before, during, after you drink), don't drink on an empty stomach and nibble something while you're drinking, set a deliberately slow pace, and do not under any circumstances agree to drink shots (including but not limited to Jager).

Nevertheless, despite precautions, sometimes the night before catches up to us in the morning after, in the form of unwholesome existential fits, a condition often characterized by a vague sensation that some dark force is sucking the soul out through clammy pores. (Side effects of having your soul sucked out your pores can include nausea, headache, and a general sense of dread at being alive to witness your soul departing.)

While there is no cure for this, you can treat the symptoms. And since this article here goes into the greasy details on that, I won't bother to repeat them here.

Instead, I will list a few of my favorite champagne cocktails, perfect for a New Year's celebration. Since you'll probably be sipping champagne at midnight anyway, you might as well keep your cocktail all in the family. Mixing a bunch of booze is a recipe for havoc in the morning. (Though it could also be that whenever you're in a position to be mixing booze, there's a decent chance that you're just drinking more than usual.) Whatever you choose, have a happy and safe one! And here's to no hanging in the new year!

Annex Theater Champagne Cocktail
This is an Allrecipes recipe posted by a friend of mine. It's what I think of when someone says, "champagne cocktail."

Casino Cocktail
1 sugar cube
¼ teaspoon absinthe (or absinthe substitute, like Pernod)
5 ounces sparkling wine
Lemon twist for garnish
Add a cube of sugar (or about 1 tspn of sugar) into a champagne glass. Drip absinthe over the cube. Fill with sparkling wine. Float a small amount of good cognac on top and garnish with a twist of lemon.

The Benediction
I just came across this one. It's taken from Standard Hotel by way of The New York Times.
3/4 ounce Benedictine
1 dash orange bitters
Sparkling wine
Add the Benedictine and bitters to a champagne flute, then fill with sparkling wine.

About Me

My favorite things to cook

My favorite family cooking traditions
My mom never liked to cook, but she did well despite herself. Her mother, my omi, was from Munich and made delicious rouladen, sauerbraten and other traditional German and American dishes. Always bins and bins of home-baked cookies at Christmas. Wonderful rye bread. And beer. Opa would say, "Brotzeit ist die beste zeit."
My cooking triumphs
We’ve made the signature timpano dish from The Big Night a couple times. And for Thanksgiving 2007, we made Turducken. My wife and I are always volunteering to cook the big holiday meals with the family. We mix a signature cocktail, and get down to it.
My cooking tragedies
I made Thanksgiving Dinner for myself once when I was snowed-in in Denver. I nearly burned down the neighborhood.
