Slovak Stuffed Cabbage

Reviewed: Mar. 3, 2008
This was the best stuffed cabbage I've ever had. Even better than my grandmother's! I've never had it with sauerkraut and bacon before but from now on this is how I'm going to make it. There are only two of us but I made the whole recipe anyhow and froze the extras for another day. I followed the recipe exactly except for one thing; I didn't use all three cups of water. I used about half that amout instead. I haven't had these for a couple of years and the smell they made when cooking brought back so many memories. Thank you so much for this great recipe.

Sugar Cookies

Reviewed: Mar. 8, 2008
I thought this recipe made perfect sugar cookies. I made them just as the recipe suggested and they were the best cookies I've had in a long time. They just had a great taste with the perfect texture. I've made them several times since then, icing them with orange or lemon icing made from powdered sugar mixed with lemon or orange juice.

Sky High Yorkshire Pudding

Reviewed: Mar. 13, 2008
I've never had Yorkshire pudding before and wanted to try it with a roast I was making. As suggested, I made sure the batter was at room temperature before baking and the puddings came out perfect. Very delicious! My boyfriend loved them so much that he begged me to make more the next night with a chicken I was roasting and then again as a snack later in week. This is definitely going to be a staple in our house from now on.

White Chocolate Fruit Tart

Reviewed: Mar. 13, 2008
This was an excellent dessert. I brought it to a party and everyone thought it was amazing. It looks very pretty with the fruit arranged on top. I agree that using the glaze makes it look so much better. I thought the crust was delicious, too. Very sweet and tasty.

Wild Rice and Squash Pilaf

Reviewed: Mar. 13, 2008
I've had a butternut squash just sitting here for weeks and was looking for a way to use it. I was so glad I used it for this recipe. It was absolutely delicious. I had all the ingredients on hand but the savory so I just left that out. I could eat this as a meal all by itself.

Beef Cabbage Stew

Reviewed: Feb. 6, 2009
This was a good, hearty recipe. I loved the addition of the cabbage. I used beef broth instead of the bouillon cubes and water, however.

New Jersey Diner Salad

Reviewed: Feb. 6, 2009
I thought this was a tasty salad and a good alternative to the same old coleslaw that I always make. Before eating, I let the salad sit for about six hours and thought the flavor was great. The onion was way too overpowering, however, even though I only used one large yellow onion. The next day, all of the flavors had mellowed out, including the onion, but I found that it was almost too bland and a little bit watery. I did like it enough to make again, though.

French Apple Tart (Tarte de Pommes a la Normande)

Reviewed: Mar. 3, 2008
This was very good and I will definitely be making it again. Next time I'll add some almond extract to the frangipane because it really didn't have the almond flavor I was expecting. I was disappointed that the sugar on top of mine never carmelized for some reason. I ended up sprinkling it with brown sugar and letting that melt over the tart to give it some color.

Ed Zieba's Famous Family Pork Chops

Reviewed: Mar. 7, 2008
I was skeptical about this recipe but tried it anyway. The pork chops ended up turning out so tender and juicy. I'll continue to make this when I'm looking for a meal that's simple to prepare. This offers a lot of flavor with very little preparation. I do agree with the reviewer who said that this might be better served with gravy, though, because mine didn't have very much juice left to serve with it when it was finished.

Bodacious Broccoli Salad

Reviewed: Mar. 13, 2008
This recipe was pretty good as is but I found the vinegar and pepper to be overpowering the first time I made it. The next time, I made a double batch for a party and added cauliflower and golden raisins, adjusting the pepper and vinegar to taste. Everyone there loved the salad.

Stir-Fried Chicken and Rice Noodles

Reviewed: Mar. 13, 2008
I was hoping the chicken would have more flavor than it did after marinating it but overall it was a very good recipe. I would try this again. My rice noodles didn't have any directions on the package so I had to look up how to cook them since I've never made them before. I ended up boiling a pot of water, adding the noodles, removing the pot from the heat, and letting them soak for five minutes. Apparently if you cook them like regular noodles they can become too tough and rubbery to eat.

Sloppy Joe Sandwiches

Reviewed: Mar. 13, 2008
I think this was a great base to start with. I ended up doubling the recipe and adding diced onions, a couple of spoonfuls of pickle relish, and some hot pepper flakes for a bit of kick. My boyfriend said that it wasn't his favorite, that it was too sweet for him. I enjoyed the sweetness of the sauce, however. It was better than the sauce you get out of a can and really wasn't much more trouble to make. I'll be making this again with the modifications I added this time. By the way, I only needed to simmer this for about ten minutes or so. 30-40 minutes is way too long for this.

Baked Ham

Reviewed: Mar. 13, 2008
I wasn't very impressed with this recipe at all. I'm giving it three stars because it didn't taste bad. It's just that it tasted like a plain old ham to me. I couldn't tell that the cola even added any flavor at all. I even marinated it over night as some others suggested. I won't be making this again. I usually just do a simple glaze of brown sugar, orange juice, and cloves which adds so much more flavor than following this recipe does.
