I am a Bead&Fiber Artist and a singer of Acoustic Folk/Rock/Blues Music. I love to cook for my friends and indeed, in the nearly ten years I spent in Key West singing with my duo, Stormy Monday, and selling my jewelry, handbags and dreamcatchers on Mallory Square, I cooked for all the holidays, birthdays and special occasions. I came back to Milwaukee to care for my disabled son and newly widowed Dad and will likely stay here in the cold for now. I am currently seeking a new music partner(must be old enough to remember watching the Beatles debut on Ed Sullivan) and hope to have my own web site up soon.
My favorite things to cook
"Glop", as my kids called it, a rice dish that had everything but the kitchen sink in it. Glop is never the same thing twice but always tasty and filling. I also love to cook Oriental, Mexican, and I have a killer pasta sauce that must cook at least eight hours, preferably ten, and then rest overnight, to be perfect. Not bad for an Irish/German girl raised to believe salt&pepper were the only spices...
My favorite family cooking traditions
My family and my friends and my kids and grandchild will pretty much eat everything I cook except the baby beef liver, bacon and onions I really love to eat - although as I am aging I don't eat as much as I used to - so I eat alone when I make it.
My cooking triumphs
Every year for nearly ten years I made traditional turkey dinners for twenty (or more)starving (it seemed) street performers (jugglers, balloon sculptors, musicians and the occasional magician) and was proclaimed "Kathy, Queen of Food". Now, back in Milwaukee, I took over my Mother's role as cook for the Thanksgiving dinner and using Mom's recipes and menu, we all stuff ourselves and remember how much we miss her.
My cooking tragedies
My first meal for my first husband and I decided to make my Mom's chop suey. She cooked for 8 people (Dad, her six daughters and herself) and I to this day have never quite gotten the hang of cutting down her recipes and making them taste the same. But the time I finished preparing the meal, I had the stuff in every pot I owned and we ended up meeting a lot of our neighbors giving the excess away...
