Catherine's Pickled Blueberries

Tangy, fruity, a little pickle-y but not overmuch. It's pretty fab on my homemade chevre.

Wow! This is really delicious - the curry flavor really is nice with okra.

Gkai Kamin

I embraced the yellow-stained fingers when I made this! It finally wore off. Fresh turmeric is bizarre, a creepy looking brown tuber that is bright orange when you peel it. The chicken with this rub on it was flavorful, almost citrusy, a pretty subtle flavor to me, but I really liked it.

Restaurant-Style Coleslaw I

Reviewed: Jun. 25, 2009
Nicely sweet, but not too much so; nicely creamy, too. I made this to put on Carolina-style hot dogs, but I can see it on a pork-and-slaw sandwich, or at any barbecue. Really nice balance of flavors and crunch.

Pat's Baked Beans

Reviewed: Jun. 25, 2009
I've always mixed different beans in my mom's Great Northern baked bean recipe, so I guess that's a slippery slope, because now I plan to abandon the family traditional recipe in favor of Pat's. These may be the best baked beans I've ever eaten. Yep, they are.

Best Carolina BBQ Meat Sauce

Reviewed: Jun. 25, 2009
This is so good that I want to put it on everything. We made this to top a Carolina style slaw hot dog, and it was perfectly spiced, tangy, and delicious, and a big hit with the workmates. Yesterday I put it on the cole slaw and the beans that were leftover from the hot dogs, and it was just as good.

Flan II

Reviewed: May 29, 2009
I've never made flan before, because the caramel part was a little daunting. I made this (with fresh goat milk, even!) and it was as delicate and sumptuous as could be!

Chiles Rellenos de San Joaquin

Reviewed: Apr. 21, 2009
Te saltiness of the cotija played really well with the cumin-onion-tomato topping (it's more like a topping than a sauce, but it's just enough). I had a little trouble wrapping the chiles around the cheese, so I used some toothpicks to close them up, and put them in the baking dish cheese-side-up, like boats. I'll definitely make these again.

Spicy Sweet Potato and Coconut Soup

Reviewed: Mar. 17, 2009
I had some shrimp stock that I made by boiling shrimp shells with celery and onion, so I used that. I also pureed the soup. It was delicious.

Tres Leches (Milk Cake)

I love this recipe, and I've made it twice. It does not make a very big cake, but it is really dense, creamy, milky, and delicious. It's very rich.

Mixed Citrus Vinaigrette

Reviewed: Feb. 3, 2009
This dressing is delicious! My fruit was not terribly sweet, so I added a few drops of honey. I tossed it with half spinach, half mixed greens, and some orange and grapefruit segments, but didn't use nuts or cheese. So fresh, so light. I'll definitely keep this one.

Pear and Gorgonzola Cheese Pizza

I had such a craving for this, and it was pure bliss. I added some caramelized onions, used pecans (I never have walnuts), and cooked the pear slices in a little bit of butter.

Pignoli Cookies I

It took two tries to get these right--the first time the dough was too wet, so the second time, I added the egg in parts until it was doughy but not wet, and they were lovely.

Eileen's Spicy Gingerbread Men

Reviewed: Dec. 29, 2008
I made several batches of this recipe for the holidays. A little extra flour helped the cookies hold their shape baking, but the dough was easy to roll and had great flavor. I thought it might be fun to have a little heat, so I added 1/8 teaspoon cayenne to the recipe. The cookies were perfect for the first few days, but became hotter as time passed. The cayenne was a good idea, but I'd go easier next time.

Nonnie's Persimmon Pudding

Reviewed: Nov. 28, 2008
This pudding is dense and sweet, and the persimmons provide more of a light floral perfume than a distinct flavor. We really enjoyed it. This was the first taste of persimmons for most of us.
