About this Cook
Male, late 30s, friend of Dorothy. Thankfully, I never seem to have much time to devote to cooking or I'd have to hit the gym 7 days a week. I do love to surprise my mate by whipping up something elaborate-looking in no time at all. Shopping for ingredients has never been easier since I got a cell phone that can browse this site for my saved recipes 24/7.
My favorite things to cook
I prefer to keep things simple, so it is often dishes that I can throw together quickly. My chili has been a favorite of my significant other for many years now, so it would have to be my favorite--just knowing that he loves it so much.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Traditions? That would be where my mother knows measurements without using measuring spoons and cups. I'm proud to have inherited her skills to continue this tradition. I have to stifle a giggle when I watch my mate carefully measuring out everything exactly as recipes instruct.
My cooking triumphs
Two desserts, a complicated cookie recipe and custard bread pudding. Both turned out incredibly well--amazing for the first time making them.
My cooking tragedies
Making a tuna casserole one cold and snowy winter night, I hadn't realized that we were out of milk. The mate says to use the chocolate milk. Unfortunately, I listened to him. Bleh. From now on, we always have a box of powdered milk in the pantry for recipes.

Pumpkin Bread Pudding
Xmas got here too quickly, so I didn't have any French bread or raisins, but it still turned out excellent with honey wheat and a little vanilla whipped cream on top. My guests (my S.O.'s parents and grandparents, all Jewish/Ukrainian immigrants) loved the dessert. I generally love bread pudding anyway, and this one is no exception. Other recipes may suggest a sweet topping (strusel or such), but the sweetness of this by itself is perfect IMHO without being too sweet. I wasn't sure what ramekins were, so I just divided the mixture into two casserole dishes. One might have been enough, but I wanted to ensure this cooked evenly all the way though. Thanks, Vivi!
