Playing House for Hurricane Season

It's that time of year again- hurricane season! In the 7 years that I
have lived on island, we have been very lucky- 2 near misses and no
direct hits. We all keep our fingers crossed from June to November, the
official season, but August through October are typically the most
active storm months.
We have moved off the boat for the next few months to house sit for
some friends who go back to the States for the season. It's nice to be
off the boat for a while, especially this time of year since it's
pretty hot and stuffy in the marina. T and I own our boat, but have
never owned a house together. When we house sit, it feels like we are
playing house and pretending to be grown-ups...even though we are both
in our late 30's!
Staying at the house requires a complete change in the way I do the
grocery budget ($15/day). On the boat, we are a few minutes walk from
the grocery, and with a tiny fridge and no freezer I am buying a few
things every day. At the house, I try to plan a weekly menu and just
shop once. Having a large fridge/freezer means I can take advantage of
the big-box store and a save a little $$ buying in bulk. But...the
regular grocery closest to the house is probably the most expensive on
island, so I have to be careful if I need to pick up any last minute
So far this week: Sunday we cleaned out the boat fridge and made pizzas
again ($14.96). Monday was a farewell dinner for the friends we are
house sitting for. He made Chicken Tequila Picatta- really really good-
and I made a Mango Cheese Ball from this site ($11.56). T planned our
menu for the rest of the week and shopped too! He spent $38.97 and I
think that will get us through the end of the week. Tuesday he made
Chicken Tostadas, then Wednesday breakfast was Huevos Rancheros.
Thursday he made kabobs on the grill, and we had plenty of leftovers.
The friends left lots of random items in the fridge that we'll try to
use up as well.
So- for the next couple months, this is the view!
