Galley Notes: Cooking for $15 a day...on a sailboat!

Hello! My first attempt at Bread Bowls turned out pretty well...they tasted great, but didn't really rise into a nice bowl. T called them Bread Sleds. Bread Pontoons. Bread UFO's. HaHa. The crab chowder was good, too, and had both again for dinner the next day!

On Thursday, T went lobster diving with a few friends, and he caught four big ones...the tails we put in  a friend's freezer, the legs we made what T calls Lobster Popcorn. Put the legs (you may have to break them in half or thirds) into a microwavable tupperware-like container with an inch or so of water. Put the lid on, and microwave for 30 seconds to a minute. The lobster meat cooks and bursts right out of the shell like popcorn. Normally, we would eat them as is, but we had a pre-4th party to go to, so we used them to make a Coconut Lobster Dip.

Another party on the 4th, this time on our boat with a few friends. They brought smoked brisket and potato salad, I made "Sweet Restaurant Slaw" from the site for the third time in 2 weeks- I love it! St. John was doing fireworks, but we were not able to see them from the boat, so we took the dinghy out and around the corner and were able to see most of the show. We took the dog with us though, and she is terrified of fireworks and thunder, so we didn't get too close. (She would have been more scared if we left her behind, since we could still hear the fireworks from our sailboat.)

Came in about $10 under budget for the week, and am having leftovers and a salad for dinner, so I am starting the budget week off well.

Patricia quit looking at the shirtless man! LOL! I have never heard of cooking lobster in the microwave, sounds interesting.

Ha Ha Patricia, you cougar you! Barb, those are no ordinary size lobster. There is enough there for a feast for days. Your budget should be safe for this week.

Thanks for the great idea for lobster popcorn. Can't wait to go pick some out of the tank and try them. Just doesn't sound as fun as diving for them or as inexpensive....

Man... I had to look at those pics a few times to even NOTICE the dang lobster! Nice job, Barbara! LOL You should rent him out on weekends to bachelorette parties.

I know I read your profile, quite a change from South Bend. My son just said tonight can we go to the VI for vacation next year. LOL .. Are you missing the snow you used to get in South Bend? Just kidding.. :)

Hi Barbara, We also live on a sailboat and I enjoy reading your blog because i can relate to the challenges of cooking in a small galley! we are spending the winter in the Bahamas and recently caught a few lobster so I thought I would try your lobster popcorn suggestion, but No POP? I did as you suggested, I even nuked them longer (2-3mins) and No POP? Any suggestions? Thanks Christy S/V Veranda

Hi Veranda! Just saw your comment on a later blog so I hope you check back here...I don't know! We make this a bunch and never not had them pop. Maybe a little more water? Hmmm...it's the steam heating inside the shell that makes them pop, so maybe soaking them in water?

About Me
