Galley Notes: Cooking for $15 a day...on a sailboat!

The $80 Spinach Salad

Good Day Everyone! This should be a good week for my $15/day menu challenge (for details see my first blog entry "A Real Galley Kitchen")- we are off the boat and are apartment/dog sitting for some friends. So this is our view for the week! I admit I'm a sucker for a good rainbow/sunset photo...

They left a fridge full of random food that we are trying to use up. So far this week we have had leftover chili from Saturday night, turkey/bacon wraps, egg salad sandwiches, and some friends took us out for dinner last night. I have spent $8.97 for eggs and fresh pasta on sale so far this week.

Tonight we are having spinach salad...which always reminds me of a restaurant dinner we had some time ago..My parents and their friends were visiting- normally this restaurant isn't in our price range. The menu offered a table side spinach salad preparation for $20 per person. The chef wheeled out a cooktop and made the whole salad at the table complete with warm bacon dressing. When we got the bill it read: Spinach Salad $80. Well, of course four of us had ordered it, but whenever T or I are asked for a recommendation for this particular restaurant, we always begin with "Well, they have this great $80 spinach salad..."

Anyway, I spent $12.20 for my salad tonight, and $12.99 for a bottle of bubbly, so $25.19. I may even make a warm bacon dressing.

Have a great day everyone!

About Me
I live on a sailboat in the Virgin Islands with a tiny fridge, so there is no room for leftovers. I love the ingredient search on this site...I never waste anything! It's very expensive to live here, so we do a menu challenge-trying to spend less than $15 a day on food.
My favorite things to cook
I am a jewelry designer and work for myself, so I have the flexibility to make time-consuming or complicated meals, but I usually end up making something quick and easy or using the slow cooker.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Oyster dressing is a must for Thanksgiving and Christmas! I keep Grandma's handwritten recipe and follow it exactly.
My cooking triumphs
My very first turkey for my husband! It's called a Black Turkey, and the best I've ever had!
My cooking tragedies
There was a Key Lime Pie that we do not talk about!
