Steamed Garbanzos?

Last night I had set out a bowl of dried garbanzo beans (aka Chickpeas) in water to re-hydrate overnight....this morning I was putting away my rice cooker/veggie steamer (I like to let it air-dry overnight after washing it) and getting ready to do the usual 'boil-on-the-stove' method of cooking them when I had a brain wave... (or a brain fart if it turned out badly!)...I thought... why not cook the garbanzos in the steamer?!
This way, you don't have to baby-sit the pot with stirring and have your stove running for over an hour (I have a gas stove and do not like to leave burners on and leave the room)...
What did I have to lose? Other than a batch of garbanzos? So experimentation was in order!

I filled up the reservoir to the brim and set the timer for 75 minutes (max time on my Black & Decker model), after 45 minutes, I checked them, nope, not done yet so I topped up the water and let it run the full 75 minutes.  'Ding!'! .... I went down to the kitchen to check again, nope, still not done, so topped up water again and let run for another 30 minutes....

'Ding!'.... went down and checked on them....and....they were DONE PERFECTLY!

NO watched pot on the stove, NO Stirring necessary, NO boil-overs, NO adding boiling water to a pot as it evaporates, and NO scummy pot to wash afterwards!!
What a BONUS!
Oh...and the 'shells' of the garbanzos stay intact and adhered to the bean...nothing more frustrating than trying to get empty shells out of a pot full of cooked beans!
I imagine this will work for just about any dried and re-hydrated  bean, so play around with the time and give it a whirl!

Never had a use for garbanzos, My wife likes them. I wonder how they would be roasted, with maybe some Adobo seasoning on them.

Just got back from running around. I was by a Big Lot and they had a bunch of rice steamer for $15. Never thought about it before. I like to "toast" my rice. How is it better in the steamer??

Great blog Ms. G, I have an old Sunbeam steamer I bought back in the 70's and I use it at least once a week. Once you start steaming, the possibilities are endless. This past summer, I even steamed my shortcake for my strawberries. I'll never make it any other way. It was fabulous!

I love this idea! I have not had good luck cooking dried beans, so I just buy canned beans. This is going to push me to give it another try! Thanks for sharing!

I love this, I always tell everyone that rice cookers with a steaming rack are the best and most versatile small appliance!! I have made just about everything in my rice cooker from applesauce to puddings to perogies and this just furthers my thoughts that there is nothing a rice cooker cant do!

My cooking tragedies
When I first got married many years ago, we got our first microwave and I attempted to cook carrots in a corningware dish with a glass lid...anyway, I inadertantly set the timer for 25 minutes and went out in the backyard, next thing I knew the glass lid of the corningware was a molten mass and the carrots had turned into little charcoal briquettes! My husband has never let me hear the end of that one! :)
