Breakfast Sausage

Reviewed: Mar. 8, 2015
Overall a nice recipe. It is too salty for my tastes so I will reduce the salt to 1 1/2 tsp if I make it again. Will also increase the herbs and spices a bit to compensate for the reduction in salt. It is so nice to be able to have sausage without nitrites or other unhealthy ingredients.

Barley Bake

Reviewed: Feb. 6, 2015
We absolutely love this! It's easy to put together with common ingredients, it's filling, tastes great and is relatively inexpensive to make make and is nutritious. What more could we ask of any dish that isn't chocolate?

Pretzel Bread

Reviewed: Sep. 23, 2014
To missem83: based on the problems you had, the most likely cause is faulty yeast. Yeast is a living organism and will die if it's too old or mixed into liquids that are too hot. Proofing is a good way to test your yeast. Mix the yeast called for in your recipe with about a 1/4 cup of warm water, or whatever liquid you recipe calls for. The liquid should be about 80 degrees- about the temperature for warming baby formula. You can also add a smidgen of sugar. Let the mixture sit for 10-15 minutes. At the end of that time it should be foamy and giving off a distinct yeasty aroma. If it isn't, don't use it. Throw it away and buy fresh yeast. I usually use instant yeast, designed for bread machines. It doesn't have to be proofed before adding it to a recipe, so I only do that if I'm unsure if it is still good. I buy my yeast in large packages from warehouse clubs and store it in the freezer for much longer storage than would be possible otherwise.

Roasted Tomato Salsa I

Reviewed: Sep. 8, 2014
I don't normally post reviews for recipes that I have changed. However I don't know how else to thank KATKRO for sharing this recipe. The only reason I made salsa the first time was that I learned that I can't have garlic and cannot find a commercial salsa that doesn't contain it. I like to use salsa in various recipes. When preparing this recipe, I leave out the garlic and cilantro because my family doesn't like cilantro. I also increase the salt. I've made it 4-5 times now and we like it so well with tortilla chips that I haven't wanted to use it in my intended recipes. Thank you KATKRO for this versatile recipe!

Pancetta-Wrapped Leek Gratin

Reviewed: Aug. 24, 2014
This recipe did not work well for me. The leeks turned out stringy and difficult to eat. I will purée the leftovers to use as a soup base. I probably won't try thi recipe again.

Key Lime Pie VII

Reviewed: Aug. 3, 2014
My family enjoyed this pie very much but it's a little bit rich for me. The preparation couldn't get much easier though. It took four Persian limes to get 3/4 cup of lime juice and the zest from two to get a tablespoon full. **note to Michellica: your pie could have turned out bitter if you included the soft, spongy part (the pith) of the lime when taking the zest off the limes. The pith tends to be quite bitter. You want only the deep green part of the skin, the part right at the surface.

Homemade Barbecue Sauce

Reviewed: Jul. 6, 2014
Overall, this is a nice, pleasant tasting sauce. It is perfect for those of us who don't like hot spicy or vinegary BBQ. The sauce turned out thinner than I prefer so I simmered it on the stove for about 30 minutes. Thank you for sharing.

Russian Mushroom and Potato Soup

Reviewed: Feb. 25, 2014
My family enjoyed this soup. The only complaint I have is that it is more "brothy" than We like. Next time I will either reduce the chicken broth to 4 cups and adjust the spices accordingly or increase the quantity of vegetables.

Slow Cooker Pumpkin Steel Cut Oats

Reviewed: Oct. 27, 2013
My family didn't care for this at all. The spices were too strong, the oats too runny.

Skillet Apple Brownie

Reviewed: Oct. 26, 2013
I don't submit reviews very often because I tend to change recipes a lot when I cook. This time, my changes were fairly minor. I was about 1/4 cup short on apples (Granny Smith), so I added that much applesauce and reduced the melted butter to 1/4 cup. Shaves off a few calories and fat grams while ensuring full the full amount of apples. Yum! This is a terrific recipe! Thanks for sharing. I will probably make it again, substituting a gluten free flour blend and an egg substitute due to loved ones with food restrictions.

Spinach Salad with Warm Bacon-Mustard Dressing

Reviewed: Mar. 7, 2013
Overall, this is a good spinach salad. However, we found the mustard in the dressing to be overwhelming. It was still reasonably good, but not something I will make again. I think one key to this recipe is to make sure the mustard you use is one that your family really, really likes.

Cheesy Skillet Dinner

Reviewed: Mar. 29, 2012
I have been making this recipe for my now teenage boys for 8-9 years. I leave out the chilis (because we don't like spicy) as well as the mushrooms. The guys scoop it up with tortilla chips. It is quick, easy, satisfying and customizable.

Meal-In-One Salad

Reviewed: Jan. 16, 2012
This is an excellent salad! I have made it many times. It is a great salad to take to a potluck because it stays well and makes a lot. Everywhere I take it, I get requests for the recipe. The only thing that I change every time I make it is to use banana chips in place of fresh bananas. Fresh bananas get mushy when they sit. This salad is also good the next day and even the next.

Ginger-Cream Bars

Reviewed: Jan. 16, 2012
This recipe makes what is essentially a wonderfully complex gingerbread. The cream cheese icing compliments to cake perfectly. I didn't have a 15 X 10 inch pan, so used a 9 X 13 instead. The smaller pan resulted in more a cake, rather than bars. Everyone I shared with loved the cake. I am looking forward to trying again with the correct size pan!

Sopapilla Cheesecake Pie

Reviewed: Dec. 1, 2011
I have made this recipe many times. It is one of my son's favorite foods! I make some minor changes- reduced fat cresent rolls and reduced fat cream cheese. They work fine. Rather than mixing the butter with the cinnamon and sugar to dot on top before baking, I find it easier to spread the cinnamon sugar on top of the cheesecake, then melt the butter and drizzle it on top.

Easy Turkey Gravy

Reviewed: Dec. 1, 2011
We love this recipe! It is easy, tastes great and makes a lot. It works really well along with the Roast Turkey Michigander Style (this site), because that recipe produces lots of broth. I like to add both mushrooms and sour cream to the gravy

Tart Cherry Soup

Reviewed: Aug. 1, 2011
We enjoyed this soup very much! It tastes very much like a lovely holiday drink and is actually quite good warm as well as cold. The one problem I had was not the fault of the recipe, rather the cherries themselves. I used a jar of cherries that had multiple pieces of pits still in the cherries due to automated mechanical pitting. I could hear them clinking against the blades of the blender. As a result, I ended up having to strain out most of the pulp to ensure there were no pits still in the soup. I would have preferred to keep the pulp in the soup to give it more body. Regardless, it was still very good and well worth trying.

Parmesan Tomatoes

Reviewed: Jun. 5, 2010
This dish is wonderful! I used roma tomatos, because they are meaty, chopped them and mixed all the ingredients together. I used fresh mozzarella cheese. After everything was thoroughly mixed, I spread it in a shallow casserole and baked per the directions. Even my tomato hating son liked this! It works well as a topping on a bagel or pita bread.

Cinnamon Bun Scones

Reviewed: May 4, 2010
I have made these scones many times over the last several years. The only time they didn't turn out well was when I tried to make them as mini scones, freezing them to bake later. However, that is my fault, not the recipes. One note though- several reviewers have referred to these scones as healthy. Look at the nutrition information: Scones are basically sweetened biscuits. If you make 12 scones as the recipe indicates, each contains 292 calories and 12.8 grams of fat. These are wonderful for an occasional treat; they are not health food.
