I simply cannot say enough good things about this recipe. If you are looking for the perfect apple pie, this is it. I only changed a few things to suit my personal taste and add convenience. First, I added about 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon and a dash of ground cloves to the syrup. Next, I used store bought, pre-rolled pie crusts. I stirred most of the syrup into the apples before adding them to the pie shell, reserving about 1/4 cup, which I left on the stove on a very low simmer so it wouldn't cool and thicken up. Then I put the lattice top on the pie and brushed the crust with the remaining syrup. Followed the rest of the recipe to a tee and it was PERFECT. Divided among four people, we ate the entire thing in one night and still wanted more. I have one of these babies in the oven right now so I can have more of it to myself! This truly is everything you want in a pie: sweet, tangy, rich, and not runny. The filling sets up quite nicely. Grandma Ople, I can't thank you enough!
