Well, there was also a blender involved, I suppose, but does that really complicate matters all that much? Not at all.  Based solely on the fact that I've never seen anywhere for sale yogurt with watermelon, not only had it never occurred to me that the two might be combined, but the… MORE

Although I never knew what ‘adobo’ meant, the first time I saw the word, I assumed it was a Spanish word. In the limited breadth of my food experience growing up, Spanish words always led to Mexican food. ALWAYS! That being said, I don’t remember when or where I first became aw MORE

At some point in my life, I decided I didn't like pasta. Well, not pasta as much as pasta dishes. And, at that time in my life, pasta dishes consisted nearly 100% of spaghetti with either meat sauce or non-meat tomato sauce. I don't think I considered lasagna to fall into the same category as… MORE

Someone told me that the simple fact of gardening is that things want to grow. That person was correct.I cannot believe how successful our first garden has proven to be thus far. If anything, it's been too successful. We haven't been too good about actually harvesting some of the herbs in a… MORE

I'm not sure exactly what I expected to see, honestly.I can say for sure that what I am seeing with the naked eye, however, is very much impressive. In my inexperienced mind, nearly everything seems to be growing at a record pace. The "Magic Mountain Sweet Basil" was the first to really catch my… MORE

After the Missus and I play our normal rounds of alternating/battling phone alarm eruption and snoozing, we begin the waking-up process by adding a trip to the bedroom window to take a first glance in daylight at our newly-planted garden.Although there is a long way to go before we're… MORE

Or, to be more accurate, planting at night. The rigors of adult life sometimes keep things from getting done in the order or at the time you plan to get them done, non?Well, it seems that way to me sometimes. If it doesn't to you, count yourself lucky and ignore me.I would say we had to make a… MORE

The actual construction project involved in the garden probably could have been smoother. It was planned out pretty well, but we ended up proceeding without necessarily having the "shovels and rakes and implements of destruction" we would need.Admittedly, I left the original planning and… MORE

The backyard has a few spots that get pretty good sunlight. For whatever reason, I had it in my head that the best thing for the garden and the yard would be to have it up against a wall of either the fence, the house, or the outbuilding. The Missus, however, deftly pointed out that the best… MORE

Selecting what we are going to attempt to grow in our garden was certainly the most exciting part of the early stages of the project. Space is, of course, limited, so it would be impossible to really grow everything that sounded good as we perused the offerings available to us.That being said,… MORE

About Me
I'm a native Michigander who has landed in the Pacific Northwest. I'm not hating the 40 degree low temperatures in winter, to be sure, especially when reading about the snowstorms back home. I've also lived in Atlanta, Denver, Madison, and Germany. I have restaurant experience working in Asian cuisine and American barbeque. I just enjoy the rhythm of prepping and cooking in the kitchen with a little music to keep me company. The bonus is when your guests truly enjoy the results of all the work.
My favorite things to cook
I really love Asian food. I prefer to have the one dish with a good mix of veggies and meat in a delicious sauce. It's quite a change from my meat-and-potatoes upbringing.
My favorite family cooking traditions
The maternal side of my family are of Czech descent, so it's those meals at Grandma's house that I love and miss. I feel the need to learn more about Czech cuisine so I can continue those traditions if and when I have a family.
My cooking triumphs
I'd say that making a Thai Chili Pepper Chicken dish for a gal early in our relationship has led to her sticking with me for a while now. Learn to cook you single fellas. It helps!
My cooking tragedies
I added cayenne pepper to a hot pan the other day, which resulted in much coughing and hacking for about ten minutes for both my gal and I. It was really ridiculous. I should know better, but I basically mace-d the household!
