New Potatoes with Caper Sauce

Reviewed: Jul. 14, 2014
These potatoes havea a good, capery flavor. I would make again for a party or large gathering, but not just for myself because I found that a whole batch was too overpowering for multiple meals. I liked that it had a unique flavor

Chicken and Olives

Reviewed: Apr. 25, 2014
Delicious and unique tasting. The flavors are complex and satisfying. This is a great meal to have when you want a dish that stands out from the rest. I substituted beef broth, but will use chicken broth (as per the recipe) next time because I think it will give a more subtle flavor.

Kung Pao Chicken

Reviewed: Apr. 18, 2014
This recipe was good, but I took off a star because it doesn't taste like the kung pao I'm used to (with a reddish sauce). It was good, and pretty much tasted of the Chinese five spice powder. I also added a yellow pepper and a lot more celery. Overall, a good meal but not quite the kung pao I was looking for.

Beef Bulgogi

Reviewed: Feb. 5, 2014
A very enjoyable meal! I substituted brown sugar for the white sugar, and added carrots and celery. Also, instead of grilling the meat I dumped out the marinade/meat/veggies into a skillet and cooked it for 10 mins on med-high heat. Served with rice it was delicious, albeit unauthentic.

Buffalo Chicken Soup

Reviewed: Jan. 29, 2014
What a fun, comfort soup! I was very skeptical before preparing, and thus pared the recipe down to two servings. To my surprise, it was better than I had hoped for. I really like the buffalo wing flavor, but don't enjoy eating wings so this fit the bill perfectly! I used a chicken breast that I freshly grilled, substituted the water/bullion for chicken broth and added extra Frank's and extra celery. It was very flavorful and rich. I am sure I will make this recipe again as it is a great soup for a cold day, but think I'll scale back the servings. Because of the flavor and high fat/caloric content one or two bowls per batch suffice.

Creamy Chicken and Wild Rice Soup

Reviewed: Jan. 22, 2014
Not a bad beginning, but it needs some serious work. I added garlic powder, herbes de provence, celery and carrots and it was STILL bland. Also, this soup was way too thick. When I reheated the leftovers for lunch today it was a solid casserole! It didn't thin at all when warmed. Not awful, but not nearly as good as the rating would lead you to believe!

Ten Minute Szechuan Chicken

Reviewed: Jan. 17, 2014
Great recipe! It tastes quite similar to P.F. Chang's kung pao. I didn't have white wine vinegar, so I substitued rice wine vinegar and also threw in a tablespoon of white wine. I added some chopped red, green and yellow peppers and peanuts when stir frying (which helped sweeten the sauce a little) and it was great. I will be making this frequently!

Chili Rellenos Casserole

Reviewed: Jan. 15, 2014
As a breakfast casserole, I would give this 4.5 stars. I made it as written and unfortunately it was very eggy and not really suitable as dinner. It had a good flavor but didn't remind me of traditional chiles rellenos. This casserole did set up perfectly though and I think that some reviewers may have used large cans of evaporated milk--this recipe calls for using one and a half 5oz cans-- which should only be 1 cup of milk. If I make it again I will try it with only 3 eggs and see how that works.

Chef John's Caramel Chicken

Reviewed: Aug. 29, 2013
Good flavor, but it was TOO spicy. Next time I'll cut back on the jalapenos some. This was similar to Pei Wei's dish, but it could use some tweaking. Try it once at least, you won't be disappointed.

Chef John's Spaghetti alla Carbonara

Reviewed: Aug. 29, 2013
This recipe was good/okay. It was a decent meal, but not on par with Buca di Beppo or what I've had in Europe. Nice try, but I'm still looking for a great carbonara recipe.

Chef John's Patatas Bravas

Reviewed: Aug. 29, 2013
Great potatoes that taste like what you get in Spain! This recipe was easy to follow, but it was time consuming. Next time I'll make the sauce and boil the potatoes the night before, so that I only have to fry and season them when I'm cooking dinner.

Quick Pickled Jalapeno Rings

Reviewed: Aug. 20, 2013
Good, simple, easy to follow recipe. Beware though, these are the hottest peppers I've ever tried (and I like spicy food)---I can't even eat one slice straight out of the jar. I'm not sure if it's the jalapenos I bought or the recipe, but I wish they were a medium heat. They've been sitting in the fridge for a few days, and hopefully they'll mellow a little more over the weeks. Next time I'll try the recipe with other veggies!

Very easy cookies to make. Great texture and strength...a little weak on the flavor though (very bland). Next time I make these, I will add additional extracts and/or juice/flavoring.

Danish Almond Puff

Reviewed: Aug. 31, 2007
I found this recipe to be much more time consuming than other reviewers noted. I would say it took closer to 45 mins to assemble. Also, while the end result was good, it wasn't great, and something better can easily be made with less work. If I do decide to make this again, I will take the other reviews' advice and put a filling between the layers.
