This year, as you can see my Witchy-Poo, she was brewing up a great time. And this year was fun. Normally every year, I let the kids have a friend or two over for a SpOoKy Dinner and off to do some trick'er Treat'N....but as Oregon has let me know, we play by it's rules with the weather. This year our eating habit and treating was totally backwards.

We've been in our house a 2nd Halloween here in Oregon, last year may have been fun, we had just gotten our furniture in from military housing and really weren't equiped for anything more then the family and a one or two extra kids, they still had a good time last year, but this year I say, I did better all the way around. I actually had set up for an actual party. 1st time ever....and I didn't go all out of my budget to do so. Rather reasonable. My photo above, that cost me $18, the witch, cauldron, "the faux fire", all a $1 each at The Dollar Tree, and the mist kit was about $12.99 at Fred Meyers. Then the plastic table clothes were $2 at The Dollar Tree...and I was able to save these items minus the table clothes for next year ;-) Root N' Toot N' Happy about that.
One thing most people don't know, is that I serve my kids a traditional meal every year. Not anything like Thanksgiving or Christmas or even New Year's Day. Just one little simple dish and a fun treat. The dish is always the same but the treats are always different. But I do always plan a gruesome dinner not just once but at least twice with in the week of Halloween.
I've been serving up my Cobweb Soup recipe for what I have thought to be about 4-5 years, my kids tell me I've been doing it since the 1st Halloween we've been a family, now going on 7 1/2 years...who's to argue with 4 kids...certainly not me. So...I'll let them win this one. I remember when I 1st made it, I told my husband we were just having Egg Drop Soup and decided not to tell my kids what we were eating and changed the name to Cobweb Soup and poor Aliena, had an aniexty attack over the fear of actually eating spiderwebs....bless her heart, she's a very literal child and Autistic. So most parents with a child that has ASD, will automatically understand, they take you straight for the actual meaning of the description and not fun pokey type of fun meanings. She has since learn to catch on to when I'm joking around and still can be amusing. Soo the 1st time, it didn't go as planned and I felt bad for her, but the other 3 children, were just fine. So I thought, well, I won't do that again. Following year, Aliena asked, "Mom are you going to make that spooky soup again, I really liked it?!" And that right there was my key to more things like that for my family. And now every year, every special holiday, I try to mix things up and keep them guessing on a few treats and special meals just to have fun with it. Last year, I served up Rat Meatloafs on a bed of maggots(rice pilaf) munching on a fake severed finger, that I shaped colored with Fondant...it was cool....hubby actually didn't think sooo but the kids were fine with it because they watched me make the fingers from start to finish & I served a Chocolate Kitty Litter cake...well the cake was too gross for our guests last year, my kids we're laughing but grossed out at the same time. I was told I got to detailed with the details....I guess I got into the spirit of things. Anyway, this year was simple, but I did go all out with the buffet of goodies and let the kids snack on things for a couple of days as long as they ate their dinner, I was cool....so here's some photos of my set up ;-) Enjoy.
Started with a punch bowl floating hand, had to make sure he was deformed and I slipped a gummy worm into it before it frozen...Nathan, my daughter's boyfriend found it later towards then last of the punch and was quite funny with his reaction. I thought the thing melted away...boy was I wrong.
This was cool to do, made dirty bones for the cake, Jenny helped make that afternoon..This you might ask, how did I do that. Simple. I dusted the candy mold with a little bit of cinnamon before pouring the melted candy chocolate in...and after it sets....makes it look like this. You don't have to do a lot of dusting in the molds..you want it to look random.
Here's the cake, Jenny had the pleasure of creating. Boy was she proud. She doesn't get to do this much with me because she's soo hyper, she can't stand in one place. But I gave her some chocolate to eat as she helped and I think, she didn't do such a bad job! She's my mini me. And she dressed up as a chef this year.
I actually made fresh popcorn in a movie theater style popper & man it was easy to do. This recipe was one that I did for Karo, who was one of the sponsor's for the Allrecipe Allstar Ambassador Program this month. Not a bad recipe but too long without being covered made the popcorn soft...but still good though.
Soo here's a view as it's coming along, see some cheese puffs, assorted gummy worms, chocolate caramel eyeballs, regular popcorn, caramel corn, pretzels, tootsie rolls..... and more!
Something happened on the way to the buffet table......someone stabbed my cake balls, it was a sad sad moment....soo Death by Raspberry Chocolate Cake Balls
Roasted Bugs in Dirt....aka hehehehe colored Pistachios with cookie dirt. That was a blast to do.
More Caramel Corn Bag Treats......
It doesn't look appetizing but the kids were digging into it before leaving to do some treatin' and couldn't wait for the soup....all decided soup when they got back. This was Gruesome Mexican Ghoulash(sp?) isn't probably right, but oh well....it's all good.
Ogre Toes, made from Pillsbury Refrigerator Pizza Dough and Almonds...makes a nice affect.
Soo the Bloody Maggot Punch was ready & the kids said Rob and I did an awesome job on the punch and want us to make it again. The floater bits for maggots were just from a can of concentrated frozen pink lemonade.
The buffet table is just about ready for some spooky little fingers, and they are almost due back from running around our little town...and it is little so they weren't gone very long and I made the soup, nice and hot.
Soo here is the table minus the cake...it was to big to place anywhere.
My Cobweb Soup is ready to be served with the Ogre Toes and what's left of the Ghoulash AND all the candy and cake.
My Aliena, she was soo tickled to be having a party.
My son Brandon and my husband Rob, chowing down. And the kids were soaked.
Jenny telling me to hurry, so that she can get a drink.
I didn't get one of my oldest because she was off hanging out with friends, nor would I post photos of the other children, but everyone had a great time.
This was one of the meals I served earlier in the week. Worm Burgers and Moldy Mac N' Cheese..
This was a blast to do, and I look forward to next year.

Melissa, it looks like you and your family had a most fun Halloween. I'm with your husband, the punch looks awesome! Don't you just love Fred Meyer? Great blog and great photos, thanks for sharing.

Thanks Candice ;-) I dooo love Fred Meyer! We did have a good time. Now I'm looking forward to Thanksgiving and visiting with new faces for hte holidays. I've come close to my husband's nephew new wife and I get to finally see her face to face. hugs!

I'm only sorry that we don't embrace Halloween a bit more here "Down-Under" even though it is starting to expand commercially.Our problem is that we don't allow the little ones our because of "Stranger Danger". You guys have so much fun with Halloween as we've visited friends in the States before at Halloween time and had us a ball. I've always made treats for those that do visit us especially the little ones that come with their parents.As for all the work that you've put into your Halloween I wish you were our neighbour and we could work together on projects for the night.You are one very special mum, congratulations on you work.

My favorite family cooking traditions
Funny but true: Cooking traditions men sit in the recliner and women in the kitchen...lol My family is always in the kitchen. My sister and her family, my parents and my family celebrate Christmas in January. Due to distance and work related jobs. Every year we plan what we are having ahead of time. Our tradition is usually food we've had abroad growing up overseas. Normally with Asia influences. It's always a special treat when we normally don't make the dishes often throughout the year.
My cooking triumphs
Unknown to me when I came up with a chicken and dumpling recipe of my own, my father was floored & delighted and told me it tasted just like his mother's.......My mom dropped her jaw because it was better then her's. It's a staple with my husband and kids.
My cooking tragedies
I had found a recipe for a Pretzel Pie(like Pecan Pie), thought it looked good and I didn't follow the recipe when it said unsalted pretzels. I just grabbed the normal stuff with the salt on it, made the pie, and my dad and husband were painting with thrist. And making weird pickle sour expressions, when I realized the pie was over salted. Oopppss! I never made it again.
