Chili I

Reviewed: Oct. 20, 2007
I'm not looking any further for a great chili recipe after finding this one. Like others I decrease the brown sugar (I use 1/8 c); sometimes I add the jalapenos & sometimes not, depending on whom I'm serving. It has an incredible complexity and depth of flavor. My whole family loves it. It's definitely worth 5 stars in my humble opinion.

We really enjoyed this yummy dessert warm from the oven with creamy vanilla ice cream. What a treat! I'm sure to make this one again and again.

Buttermilk Rye Bread

Reviewed: Jul. 9, 2001
I made this recipe in my bread machine. It turned out very well--nice texture and a light rye bread taste. I agree with Phyllis's mother; it's just about ideal.

Old Fashioned Coconut Cream Pie

Reviewed: May 24, 2008
I used coconut milk and half & half as well as cornstarch instead of flour as per another reviewer's suggestion. It turned out sooooo delicious. It's the supreme coconut cream pie.

Harvest Pork Stew

Reviewed: Mar. 5, 2010
I made according to the directions except for 3 things. I doubled the amount of rosemary & sage. I used cubed rutabaga instead of potato, and, instead of 3 c. of chocken broth, I used 2 c. chicken broth and 1 1/2 c. of riesling wine. I'm quite pleased with the result and can't wait to share it with my family.

Orange, Walnut, Gorgonzola and Mixed Greens Salad with Fresh Citrus Vinaigrette

Reviewed: May 22, 2010
Very tasty salad! I reduced the sugar by half after reading the comments of others. I also used a fig balsamic vinegar. With those changes, the citrus dressing was very good.

World's Best Pasta Sauce!

Reviewed: Sep. 27, 2009
The first time I try a new recipe I usually make it exactly as the recipe states. Then I modify as I think necessary. Tonight I made this sauce. Yummmm! I'm not modifying a thing. It's delicious.

Sweet and Hot Apple Slow Cooker Pork

Reviewed: Jan. 24, 2010
Prepared according to the directions, this was good enough to try again. It was only a little spicy; nobody at the table found it at all objectionable heat-wise. Next time I'll try putting the veggies in the crockpot first and use chicken broth instead of water to thicken the gravy which needed a little more flavor. I'll also try using fresh apples with sugar & maybe some cinnamon as others have mentioned. Pork was very tender, cooked on low heat for 7 hours.

Slow Cooker Creamy Potato Soup

Reviewed: Jan. 7, 2007
By our family standards, this was not a very good soup. I salvaged it with a good bit of shredded cheddar cheese and some added crushed red pepper flakes. It's not a recipe I'll be using again. Sorry!

Pecan-Crusted Catfish with White Cheddar Grits

Reviewed: Feb. 11, 2010
I made the recipe as directed. The fish was probably worthy of three stars, but the grits definitely were not. I don't make grits often, so I followed proportions and directions given in the recipe. Afterwards I checked the directions on the grits package; it indicates a ratio of 4 parts liquid to 1 part grits. The recipe ratio is 2:1 which makes the grits way too thick. They would never have been the creamy foundation for this fish. I'm tossing this recipe. Once was enough.

This was far from the best tuna salad I've ever eaten. I would not prepare it again.

Vietnamese/Chinese Pork Chops

Reviewed: Feb. 16, 2010
I really like trying new recipes, and my family is far from finicky about trying whatever I put before them. I'm giving the recipe one star because it's the lowest option. This recipe doesn't deserve it though.
