Sweet, Sticky and Spicy Chicken

Reviewed: May 1, 2012
This was wonderful. I followed other reviewers and coated the chicken in flour before frying it. I also added some sauteed onions and red bell peppers. It was the perfect amount of sweet and spicy. I did add a splash of mirin at the very end to round out the flavors. Really delicious and quick. Next time I might try using 1 tbsp honey and 1 tbsp maple syrup, just for a twist.

Butter Chickpea Curry

Reviewed: Dec. 1, 2011
Amazing! This is by far my favorite curry recipe now. The first time I made it I made a few modifications based on what I had on hand and it worked out so well that now that's my standard. I substituted about 3 tbsp of tomato paste mixed into a cup of water in place of the tomato soup. I also used coconut milk instead of the cream. I think that gave the dish a little added sweetness and kept it non-dairy for my lactose intolerant husband. I've also used sweet potatoes with stellar results. Last time I made it I turned it into an entree for company by adding chicken. Delicious in every variation!

Cinnamon Hazelnut Biscotti

Reviewed: Nov. 17, 2011
Really delicious! I doubled the cinnamon and sprinkled a bit of it on top of the cookie loaf before putting it in the oven. That made the cinnamon flavor really stand out. Add a drizzle of chocolate and these are divine!

Gypsy Soup

Reviewed: Nov. 8, 2011
This recipe is from The New Moosewood Cookbook. I've been making it for years. It's really delicious. My personal preference is to omit the celery and substitute red bell pepper for the green bell pepper. It's very unique and really warm and comforting.

Crunchy Romaine Toss

Reviewed: May 9, 2011
Delicious! I thought the dressing was a little bland so I added the seasoning packet from the ramen noodles and that was perfect. I also used cashews instead of walnuts - just a personal preference.

Quinoa Salad with Grapefruit, Avocado, and Arugula

Reviewed: May 9, 2011
I was skeptical about the grapefruit, but it's one of my favorite fruits, so I gave it a try. I used parsley instead of cilantro because my husband hates cilantro and baby spinach instead of arugala because that's what I had. It was absolutely delicious! Really fresh and clean.

A-Maize-ing Corn Chowder

Reviewed: Mar. 28, 2011
I used to love the corn chowder in a can when I was a kid, but now I like to make all my soups from scratch (a lot less sodium and more flavor that way). I used this recipe as a base. I didn't use any bacon because I don't eat pork products, but my husband and I thought this was amazing. Since some reviewers said it was too thin, I used 4 potatoes instead of 2, and used only one can of creamed corn. I topped it with a splash of hot sauce and some freshly snipped chives and it was wonderful! Really comforting and definitely brought me back to my childhood with the same delicious flavor.

Broccoli with Garlic Butter and Cashews

Reviewed: Mar. 8, 2011
I was really excited about this recipe. The flavor was very good, but 7 minutes was too long to boil the broccoli. I took it out after 5 minutes and it was mushy. Maybe my pieces were too small? I would definitely try it again with less steaming time.

Summer Squash Puffs

Reviewed: Dec. 30, 2010
I didn't have enough oil to deep fry this time, so they weren't as puffy and light as I expected, but the flavor was very good. Next time I'll use the deep fryer.

Sweet Potato and Turkey Shepherd's Pie

Reviewed: Dec. 30, 2010
This was a little bland for my taste. I made some homemade cranberry sauce to go with it and that helped a bit. I also thought the ground turkey got a little dried out after all that cooking and would have prefered piececs ofleftover roasted turkey. Overall a good base, but not spectacular.

Vanilla Spice Bread

Reviewed: Dec. 10, 2010
This bread was so warm and comforting. I flavor of the vanilla and spices were very subtle, but really made a huge impact. I used soy milk instead of real milk because my husband is allergic to dairy and it was still moist and delicious.

Pumpkin Ginger Cupcakes

Reviewed: Dec. 10, 2010
I didn't have any crystallized ginger, but they were fantastic without it. I made an orange cinnamon glaze (powdered sugar, cinnamon, orange juice, milk) instead of frosting and they were so moist and delicious!

Autumn Apple Tart

Reviewed: Dec. 10, 2010
I have a tart dough recipe that I love, so I used that in place of the one listed, but the concept and the topping are so great. I love the idea of apple crisp in a in tart shell. This is the perfect Fall dessert and it's so easy to make.

Pumpkin Pecan Biscotti

Reviewed: Dec. 10, 2010
These were good, but not great. I really enjoyed the flavor and the pecans added a nice touch, but there was something odd about the texture. After they came out of the oven I tried one and it had a consistency almost like play-dough, kind of dry and chewy, which makes me think that there was too much flour. I'll definitely make these again, but will play around with the measurements of dry vs. wet ingredients.

Cinnamon Swirl Bread

This was delicious. I used brown sugar, cinnamon, and a pinch of nutmeg and cloves to sprinkle in between the layers of batter. I will definitely make this again in the future.

Bread Machine Challah II

Reviewed: Dec. 2, 2009
I've tried so many challah recipes and I like this one a lot. I followed a reviewer's suggestion and added an extra 1/2 cup flour to prevent stickiness. It had wonderful texture and flavor. The first time I made it I didn't have any honey, but after making it again with the honey added, I actually liked it better without because it was a tad bit fluffier. Really good!

Balsamic Glazed Salmon

Reviewed: Nov. 11, 2009
I didn't really care for this. I love the flavor of balsamic and thought it would go nicely with salmon, but I think the orange and the brown sugar made it taste a little off. It was still good, but definitely not great.

Scott's Buffalo Wing Sauce

Reviewed: Mar. 10, 2009
This recipe is much better than plain hot sauce and butter. The sweetness from the ketchup and honey cuts a lot of the acidity from the hot sauce. The only change I made was to increase the amount of hot sauce and add some cayenne because I like spicy buffalo wings. Great basic recipe.

Autumn Harvest Cookies

Reviewed: Oct. 23, 2008
These cookies were delicious. I added an extra tablespoon or so of brown sugar and used 1 teaspoon of OJ because I didn't have any orange extract. The flavor was good, but a little lacking, so I made an orange glaze (powdered sugar, orange juice, and cinnamon) which added exactly what was missing. They got rave reviews from all of my guests.
