After spending my entire life in the Midwest, I recently moved to Scotland. The things I miss from home are mostly food-related. I'm always looking for ways to make my favorites using locally available ingredients...sometimes a real challenge. Also challenging is learning to use the metric system for measuring ingredients.
Update: now living in Germany and learning to cook once again!
Update2: back in KC, eating all the foods I missed while in Europe and missing all my favorites from there. There's no pleasing some people.
My favorite things to cook
Comfort food like biscuits & gravy, chicken & dumplings, cheesy potato soup...
My favorite family cooking traditions
My grandmother used to make the world's best fried chicken. It involved lots of grease and adding water at the end of cooking. Her gravy was incredible! I've never been able to duplicate them, much to my sorrow.
My cooking triumphs
I do make a pretty good sausage gravy for biscuits. I like to experiment and once created a cream pie with lemonade, cream cheese and blueberries that was very nice.
My cooking tragedies
I have been learning to cook British style with new ingredients, an electric stovetop that adjusts verrry slowly and a very small oven. I'm also experimenting with German recipes for my German husband. Lots of opportunities for tragedy here!
