Dutch Babies II

Reviewed: May 17, 2009
To me this is one of those “grandma made” recipes that is good if you grew up with it and it reminds you of home and your childhood. It tasted like a flat rubbery thick crepe. I tried several variations by other reviewers (maple syrup, cinnamon, sugar, combination cinnamon/sugar, add splash of vanilla to batter, butter and warm honey, powdered sugar. Nothing really helped. I thought the honey was terrible on it.

Slow Cooked Corned Beef for Sandwiches

Reviewed: May 17, 2009
I'm giving this 5 stars. It was easy and delicious! This is a keeper for me. I made sandwiches; however, it would have made a wonderful dinner served with potatoes and cabbage. The meat was tasty and tender.

I thought the sauce was fantastic and this recipe is a good tasting, easy sandwich for unexpected drop in company or an every day family lunch. Thanks.

Irish Boxty

Reviewed: Apr. 25, 2009
I thought these were good and will make them again. I am Ukranian background and these reminded me of potato pancakes, which I love and find the potato pancakes on the lighter side as there is less flour in them than the Boxty; however, I will make the Boxty to have a traditional Irish meal on Saint Patty's Day or if I'm entertaining the Irish:) so I can serve the traditional meal. Thanks for the submission as I enjoy making and trying authentic receipes.

Basic Chicken Salad

Reviewed: Apr. 24, 2009
This recipe lived up to it’s "basic" name. It was indeed very basic. I tried to rate it on its own merit because if you have to add several ingredients it then becomes another receipe. I will not make it again and will search for a tastier chicken salad receipe.

Dressed-Up Tuna Salad

Reviewed: Apr. 2, 2009
This was a very simple salad, it looked nice and tasted good but nothing spectacular.

Jamaican Oxtail with Broad Beans

Reviewed: Mar. 23, 2009
This was excellent. I'll definitely use it again. I couldn't find broad beans so I substituted green beans and I ommitted the chile pepper. I used a crock pot on high for the 6 hours and we ate every bit.

Hamburger Salad Sandwiches

Reviewed: Mar. 21, 2009
I didn't care for this and will not use it again. I thought it was pretty bland and not eye-appealing at all.

Homefried Potatoes with Garlic and Bacon

Reviewed: Mar. 21, 2009
The next time I make it, I will drain all but 2T of bacon grease before adding the onions and potatoes. Other than that, it was very tasty.

Corned Beef and Cabbage

Reviewed: Mar. 19, 2009
This was great and easy! I replaced another receipe from this site that called for George Killian’s Irish Red Beer and although that one was good, this I felt was better. I did not cut my brisket in half and found I only needed to cook the meat 5 hours and then another 2 after I added the cabbage. Excellent!

Amazingly Easy Irish Soda Bread

Reviewed: Mar. 19, 2009
This is excellent! I had initially tried the Better than Grandpa McAndrews Irish Soda bread recipe on this site and thought that was good until I tried this one! This one had more flavor and although the other was good, this was a step above in my opinion. I followed the advice of another reviewer and added raisins and craisins. I made another two loaves the next day!

Grandpa McAndrew's Irish Soda Bread

Reviewed: Mar. 13, 2009
I thought this was a good, easy receipe. I used the ingredients as stated and it turned out fine. I saw no need for salt as another reviewer suggested. It is supposed to be a flat, solid bread. It tasted great for the type of bread it is and I was looking for a traditional type Irish Soada bread for St. Patrick's day that was easy and this fit the bill.

Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak

Reviewed: Mar. 8, 2009
I won't be using this recipe again. I did not care for the taste of the meat. The gravy was fine and especially good on the mashed potatoes I served with it, but again the meat did nothing for me or the two other people to whom I served it.

Finnish Turnip Casserole

Reviewed: Mar. 5, 2009
This was just ok for me. I didn't care for the cinnamon topping and even with the addition of the eggs, the casserole was not firm enough for me.

Strawberry Oatmeal Breakfast Smoothie

Reviewed: Mar. 3, 2009
I'm not a health nut or vegan but I am trying to eat healthier and looking for recipes which I can transition. Outside of the powdery consistency of the oatmeal, I found this to be quite good. I will make it again and hope my taste buds will adjust to the oatmeal, as I know it is good for me:). I did eliminate the white sugar as I found it was sweet enough without it. I haven't quite made the soy milk transition and did use 2% milk.

Sausage-Stuffed Squash

Reviewed: Mar. 3, 2009
I thought this was very tasty. I did substitute turkey sausage and, as suggested by another reviewer, added pecans and liked the idea of dried cranberries to try the next time. I will use this again and think it is a good winter and holiday side dish.

Pierogi (Polish Dumplings)

Reviewed: Feb. 11, 2009
I thought the receipe was good but not great. I thought the dough was a bit dry and the filling a bit loose compared to the filling my grandmother, mother and my friend's mother use. My grandmother and mother used Farmer's cheese in the potato filling but I can't get it where I live so I substitute cottage cheese and find that I like the addition of the cheese better than the Potato filling listed. As far as the dough was concerned, I don't use sour cream, I use 1/3 c water for my liquid, 2 eggs, salt, no baking powder and find it makes a good medium-soft dough. I put it in a plastic bag so it won’t dry out, if I'm not going to use it right away, after I've kneeded it. When ready to assemble I divide dough in half. On a floured board (surface) roll out each half to about 1/8” roll and cut in ¾ in pieces and flatten with my hand, insert the potato/cheese filling and crimp it around the edges. My grandmother used to roll out the dough and use a glass to cut circles to ensure a more uniform size. For the potato mix, I peel and cook 5 potatoes. Mash and add ¼ stick of margarine and ½ large onion that has been sautéed in butter and 4 oz of small curd cottage cheese and cooled in the refrigerator until it is a bit stiff. I am always looking for a bettr one though so enjoy trying all submissions.

Oatmeal Waffles

Reviewed: Jan. 25, 2009
I thought this was a very good, hearty waffle. I was glad that another reviewer stated how many waffles it made (4 or 16 pieces if you cut each waffle into 4 sections) as that gave me a good idea as to the quantity to make. I found that these were so hearty we could only eat 1/2 waffle each. The only change I made was to substitue white flour for wheat and used canola oil, as suggested by other reviewers and that worked out well for me. I think the next time I make it, which it will be a keeper, I'll add some chopped pecans. I put leftovers in the freezer to enjoy another day.

Pan Pierogies

Reviewed: Jan. 22, 2009
I don't think this recipe comes anywhere near replacing a genuine Pierogie recipe or is even in a Pierogie category. It is not a "keeper" for me.

Crabmeat Salad

Reviewed: Jan. 22, 2009
I love crabmeat but I didn't think this recipe had all that much taste and the veggies overpowered the crabmeat. I won't use it again.
