Phyllo Turnovers with Shrimp and Ricotta Filling

Reviewed: Sep. 17, 2007
This was my first time working with Phyllo and I had great success. The filling was absolutely delicious. I did do one thing differently. I did not use the oil, only the butter. Try dipping the turnovers in Siracha. It is delicious. Also, I did freeze some filling and made more turovers a couple of weeks later with very good results.

Macaroni Salad

Reviewed: Feb. 22, 2009
I wonder if the 5 cups of macaroni is a typo, I believe it should read "5 cups cooked macaroni." That is the assumption I used when making this recipe, but still I ended up adding more mayo and some milk on the advice of another reviewer. Also, I used some dill relish in place of the pickle (same thing, right?).

Early Times Mint Julep Recipe

Reviewed: Mar. 9, 2008
I did enjoy this recipe, but not everyone that I served it to enjoyed it as much. I found that if you add twice as much more simple syrup to each drink that they will be better received. Unless you have a kentucky whisky lover, then leave it the way the recipe reads. This was okay, always wanted to try but haven't until now. I think that if we were in the hot sun at the Kentucky Derby the drink would make more sense than after dinner drinks during winter at home.

Cajun Pineapple Salad

Reviewed: May 9, 2007
My boyfriend said that this recipe is "the perfect blend between sweet and spicy." Also, it is lovely on the bed of fresh lettuce leaves.

Hot Dog Relish

Reviewed: Feb. 22, 2009
I didn't have any green tomatoes, so I used tomatillos in their place. Their seeds looked lovely in the relish. Also, I did reduce the recipe to 10 servings and next time I would add slightly less sugar. This was very good on a hot dog.

Mexi-Italian Salsa

Reviewed: Mar. 27, 2011
I was kinda unsure about how this would turn out, but it was great! The only change I made was to double the cumin. I would make this again.

Gorgonzola Dip

Reviewed: Oct. 22, 2008
This is one of the best dips I have ever made! I served it in a bread bowl with a side of green onions, celery and pita chips. I used about 3 oz of gorgonzola and that was plenty. Also, I used dried dill and cut the amount in half from the fresh. I am making this again tonight!

Hot Dog Soup

Reviewed: Jun. 12, 2008
The soup should get 5 stars for ease and 4 for taste. I feel that I could have used 1 more parsnip. Also, I added an additional 1/2 tsp of basil and a couple more dashes of pepper. Lastly, I did not put in the whole 16oz of hot dogs. I used all but 3 dogs, otherwise it would have been too much. We would make this again, as we were surprised how creamy and satisfying this soup is. This could be a main course by itself! Just need some saltines on the side.

Sicilian Meat Roll

Reviewed: Nov. 14, 2009
Pretty good. I like the choice of spices, works very well. I don't see the cheese and the ham as necessary, though. there are much better recipes out there for stuffed meatloaf than this one. But omitting the cheese and ham, I would definitely make this again.

Apple Stuff

Reviewed: Jul. 23, 2008
This recipe is really easy and good. However, the recipe needs some doctoring. I used the sugar free strawberry-banana jello, but I didn't really taste it. it gave the dessert a nice color, though. Also, I added a pinch of nutmeg and 1 tsp. of cinnamon to the topping. As well, I split the sugar into 1/2 brown sugar and 1/2 white sugar. Both of those were on the advice of other reviewers. Also, FYI, I used slightly tart yellow apples. And i left the peel on.

Broccoli with Garlic Butter and Cashews

Reviewed: Jan. 17, 2011
Very good. You could use about 2 pounds of broccoli to the same amount of sauce.

Texas Teriyaki Marinade

Reviewed: Sep. 17, 2009
We did a full wood smoke of a whole chicken and used this marinade. I would not recommend this recipe for a slow smoke, because the sugar in the recipe will make the smoke cling too much causing a slightly acrid flavor to the skin of the chicken

Pork and Hominy Stew

Reviewed: Dec. 6, 2007
I did slightly alter this recipe on the advice of other reviewers. I used broth instead of water and overall I added less liquid than the recipe called for. I served the pork/hominy mixture in bowls and served the tortillas, cabbage, limes, sour cream and arbol mixture on the side. We took the pork/hominy out of the bowls and made tacos, then the broth was like a dipping sauce. I would give this recipe 6 stars if it were possible! For those who say that this recipe has no flavor, you must have done something wrong. Don't skip the arbols, it's a must! Thank you for a lovely recipe!!

How can you go wrong with trail mix? I added some toffee chips and pecans. Yummy! Good to eat at all those softball games.

Muriel's Turnip Casserole

Reviewed: Sep. 4, 2013
I like this recipe, but I had to somewhat alter the original. I reduced the 6 tbls butter to 4 tbls, make sure you are using unsalted butter. I did not put butter on the top at the end, didn't seem necessary. Also, I increased the eggs to 3 and doubled the bread crumbs. I did reduce the salt, but I could have reduced it even more. I am wondering if the recipe meant to say 1 teaspoon salt, not tablespoon.

Ukraine Baked Potato Salad

Reviewed: Aug. 22, 2010
Yum! I did make some slight changes, though. I did put salt and pepper on each potato layer; used chive & onion sour cream; parsley and a bit of olive oil drizzled on the top layer (which I ended with potatoes, not sour cream) and covered the dish for baking.

Sister Slaw

Reviewed: Aug. 28, 2009
In the midwest they make vegatables larger! I only used 1/2 of a cabbage and 1/2 of a "bunch" of kale. This recipe does not need the full 2/3 cup oil, about 1/2 cup should do nicely. Otherwise, very good.

Spinach Gnocchi with Gorgonzola Cream Sauce

Reviewed: Feb. 3, 2009
This recipe was absolutely wonderful. I did not add the brandy extract to the sauce, but I made everything else to the recipe. I recommend looking up Strozzapreti on Wikipedia to get the history on this dish. Do not overwork or undercook your pasta, because it will not come out well. This recipe is possibly not for cooks new to working with pasta doughs. Wow!!

Whiz Sausage Balls

Reviewed: Jan. 18, 2008
I made this super fast and easy recipe for a New Year's Eve party. The only thing that I did not like about the balls was that they were a strange orange color from the process cheese. I served them with a marinara dipping sauce. I tasted one when they were right out of the oven. And that was the only one I ever got, because they were eaten up a the party (which had quite a spread already) very quickly.
