About this Cook
I have been cooking and baking since I was about 12 - that's about 35 years. I considered going to culinary arts school, but never did. I love all kinds of cuisine - I just love food (and eating.)
My favorite things to cook
I like easy recipes with a lot of ingredients. Those kinds of recipes always seem to be more satisfying and flavorful.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Some of my favorite recipes from when I was a kid are my mother's Stuffed Peppers. I've never had anything like them before or since! Also, Chicken Paprikash right from my Hungarian family kitchen. I will get those recipes on this site at some point.
My cooking triumphs
I once made a goat cheese and roasted vegeteble lazagna completely from scratch, including scratch pasta with my new pasta machine. It took forever, but it was awesome!
My cooking tragedies
In the early days (when I was 12-13) I blew up the gas stove when I was getting ready to bake something. Yikes! I had turned on the gas while waiting for my aunt to come over to light the oven (see, there was a reason they didn't let me do it.) Right before she came over I turned it off again, thinking it had been on too long. I said nothing to her and she lit the oven and it blew up in her face (she was okay, just singed and mad.) Baking has been a tragedy since I moved from the east coast to Colorado. The altitude changes everything, but I never know when to adjust. Sometimes it just means taking a chance to see if the recipe will work out or needs adjusting.

Sweet Potato Patties
These patties were great! I made them exactly as the recipe says. I changed the sauce only because we accidentally bought vanilla yogurt and decided adding pineapple juice would be much too sweet. BUT, we happened to have a jar of pineapple salsa (just pineapple and spice, no tomato) in the fridge. That handled the fruity and the spicy, while the yogurt contributed creamy and sweet. Awesome all around!

Quick Chicken Stew
I could have probably left this recipe alone as it was (except for needing some extra liquid because the tomatoes I used didn't have very much juice) and it would have been fine, but I can't seem to bring myself to do that! ;-) Here's what I did: I added chicken broth until I liked the juiciness. I added 1 tsp. of sugar, put in 1 tsp. of salt and 1 extra Tbsp. of butter. I would have added Parmesiano Reggiano instead (and will next time) but I didn't have any, so I added some asiago cheese. Also, I'm a pretty proficient cook, but I don't see how this gets on the table in half an hour unless you're a speed demon or you pre-cut the vegetables and don't cook them very much. This took closer to an hour to get to the table. My boyfriend and I both really enjoyed this with a crusty baguette and I had leftovers with some spiral noodles.
