I'm 26 years old. I grew up helping my mom in the kitchen and have been cooking on my own for 7 years. Now that I'm a wife and mother, I am more concerned about cooking healthy and preparing balanced meals that benefit my family. As much work as cooking every day may be, it is satisfying to know that I am taking good care of my family.
My favorite things to cook
I love trying new cookie recipes and changing up old dinner favorites (when my husband asks what's for supper, he frequently hears "I don't know what it's called; I just made it up."
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mom and both my grandmas have always been generous cooks. They show love by cooking and baking for family and friends and even strangers. I hope to carry on that tradition in my home.
My cooking triumphs
I have a "one-butt" kitchen: 7 x 7 feet square before cupboards and appliances. So I was really proud of myself for preparing Thanksgiving dinner for eight all on my own. I grilled a turkey to keep the oven free, made apple, pumpkin, AND pecan pies, plus all the traditional sides including homemade rolls. Everything turned out great and my relatives were quite pleased!
My cooking tragedies
Once when I was in college, I made chili for my roommates. I don't know what I did wrong, but it turned out AWFUL! Didn't taste like chili at all and was really yucky! Since then I was terrified to try my hand at chili. Still, the story has a happy ending: my husband bought me a slowcooker for Christmas and I have since made a delicious chili!
