Moist Cheesecake

Reviewed: Feb. 14, 2010
Made this with a premade pie shell crust and halved the recipe, it was a perfect amount. However it didn't come out like my mom's which is almost exactly the same recipe so I don't know what happened. It wasn't really cheesy or lemony enough. Maybe I overwhipped the evaporated milk or didn't use exactly half the jello pack, who knows. Was a bit runny as well. Served with frozen berries boiled with sugar, water and cornstarch.

Italian Wedding Soup I

Reviewed: Feb. 14, 2010
I read the reviews first and made with the following changes. Doubled the carrot, halved the pasta (cooked it first), and used half beef and half chicken broth. I also browned the meatballs in a pan first. It was quite good, needed a bit of salt and could use more broth. However I used penne pasta, couldn't find orzo, and I used 1.5 cups (recipe would have been 3 cups) and this was quite a bit of pasta, I could have used less but the shape of penne takes a lot of room. I also used a third of a pack of frozen spinach, which was perfect.

Wild Mushroom Ragout in Puff Pastry Shells

Reviewed: Feb. 6, 2010
This definitely wasn't as good as expected. I thought that all the ingredients were really good but they didn't come together. I made it exactly as indicated except I used dried herbs (1/3 of the fresh amount) and only white button mushrooms. It was far too vinegary and lacked any other flavor. If I ever made this again, I would cut down on the vinegar or leave it out. Maybe add some beef bouillon. Or just use a pack of knorr with less water and some mushrooms :)

Hungarian Mushroom Soup

Reviewed: Feb. 2, 2010
I tried this recipe since someone said it was better than the russian potato mushroom recipe. Not so. This was more like a mushroom gravy than a soup, and way too salty. I will not make this again. And the russian potato mushroom is my all time favorite soup. Must be personal taste.

Carrot Burgers

Reviewed: Jan. 30, 2010
Really great burgers. I also shredded my carrots and had no issues at all with them holding together. This made 4 burgers and 1 little one for us. Had them with all the fixings so tried a little piece on its own, delicious! Crispy on the outside and gooey in the middle. Will definitely make again.

Riblets and Sauce

Reviewed: Jan. 25, 2010
I tripled the sauce, as per other reviews to make atleast double. I also left out the salt since I could add that later since one review said it was too salty. It was not lacking any salt so that was a good choice. They weren't as "fall off the bone" as my recipe which cooks them only in the oven and the sauce was not that great. They were only ok.

Quick Chili I

Reviewed: Jan. 23, 2010
Great standard recipe. I have been making this with fake veggie meat (yves mexican flavored, it's 3/4 pound per pack) and have been using tomato paste instead of tomato sauce since as some people said, it's too liquidy. I don't have this problem with the paste. Also I found that if you put the beans in undrained, then don't add salt, it's too much.

Balsamic Roasted Pork Loin

Reviewed: Jan. 16, 2010
I made this with a 1kg loin cut in half and halved the recipe. Marinated the night before. The olive oil seized up in my fridge to form a yellow solid paste but this was ok. I thought I could cook it half the time with it being half the size, but no. It was still raw in the middle after 40 minutes, I guess because of the thickness. Anyways, it didn't have any great flavor, the middle part which was still tender was good but the outsides were overcooked. I won't make this again.

Jalapeno Popper Spread

Reviewed: Jan. 16, 2010
I made this by adding equal parts mayonnaise, parmesan and 2 times the cream cheese. This way I could control the amount, I then added jalapenos by eye. Microwaved for 3 minutes. There was a layer of oil on the top which I tried to mix in, it didn't. So for a party, doesn't give a very good presentation. Tasted good, I ate with rippled chips but I can imagine it being much better with corn chips. Nevertheless, it wasn't wow.

Oven Roasted Potatoes

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2009
This recipe was really easy. I thought it wouldn't be enough oil for 4 potatoes but it really was. The spiciness was good as they seemed to get spicier when reheated. Would also make great breakfast potatoes.

Pecan Pie V

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2009
This recipe was pretty easy, amounts were good, filled the pie exactly. The problem I had was not the taste but how it looked. I didn't put any pecans on the top before baking, thought I'd add them when the pie firmed up a little. The problem was that putting it in at 400 immediately put a hard crust on the pie so putting pecans on was no longer a possibility. I'm used to seeing pecan pies with a soft top, not a leathery brown hard top. Other than appearances, the pie tastes great. So I might try it again with the suggestions of reviewers to bake it longer at a less hot temperature.

Coconut Macaroons German Style

Reviewed: Nov. 24, 2009
These worked out fine. I cooked them until stiff and then let cool down. They are good, just not wow. I love meringue and love coconut, so I thought these would be amazing, but I won't be making them again.

Chicken Cordon Bleu II

Reviewed: Nov. 22, 2009
I was really surprised I couldn't give this more stars after making it. The sauce was really plain. It smelled great with the wine, thought it would be fabulous but it just wasn't. Also with the super long cook time, all the cheese ran out of the chicken making it very plain. More toothpicks might have saved it, but I will not be making this again.

French Onion Soup V

Reviewed: Nov. 22, 2009
This soup was pretty good and pretty easy to make. It wasn't wow! I guess it was pretty classic but wasn't bursting with flavor. I added quite a bit of salt as well to make it a little more flavorful. Looking at other recipes, I added Worchestershire sauce to the leftovers and it did give it a better flavor.

Taco Seasoning I

Reviewed: Nov. 17, 2009
This smelled just right. I think it could be even spicier but some hot sauce could take care of that. I'm happy to find an MSG free solution as well. Thanks!

Crispy Baked Basa

Reviewed: Nov. 9, 2009
This was pretty easy. Like other reviewers, I used dijon mustard. The sauce was not at all spicy. The fish was ok, sauce was ok. Was nothing special for me so I will not make again.

Easy Raspberry Sorbet

Reviewed: Nov. 9, 2009
This was very easy, a bit pricey though and hard to calculate for a Canadian. Just so others know, in Canada, our cool whip tub comes in 1L, this means you need to use 3 cups of it for this recipe, not the whole thing. Also if you get a regular can of lemonade, it's 12 ounces, so you need to use half of it. I would not make this again as I feel guilty about eating whipped oil/fructose corn syrup products, but if you are allergic to dairy, it's a great option. More lemon would be nice, maybe giving it a kick with some rind or juice, you can always taste it before you freeze it :)

Puttanesca or Kalamata Kwik Sauce

Reviewed: Nov. 6, 2009
I would rate this 5 stars except it was a bit too spicy for me. Next time I will halve the amount of crushed red pepper. My nose and eyes were running! I felt bad feeding this to my mother who has trouble with spicy foods. But the flavor was great and the ingredients are all on hand so I will try again. It didn't look like this would be enough for 4, but it really was. Alongside I cooked an entire box of whole wheat penne (also for 4) and the amounts were perfect.

Made this with brewed coffee, and did half coffee, half milk. It whisks really nicely, with 1% and whole milk.
