About this Cook
I am a physicist who works as an engineer. I am vegetarian. Before I had kids, I enjoyed cooking elaborate meals-after the fourth child, I gave up on fancy and I'm happy if people don't complain. My husband also does alot of cooking, but doesn't cater to everyone as much.
My favorite things to cook
I love to bake bread. I love to make Christmas cookies and soups. I suppose I'm into comfort foods.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Everyone in the family likes something different. We have one son who is vegan, I am vegetarian and the rest are omnivores. We have a hard time finding anything everyone will eat so we make mix and match dinners.
My cooking triumphs
Following the Gourmet Magazine Thanksgiving for vegetarians and also making a turkey and having it all go well and be enjoyed by well-behaved kids.
My cooking tragedies
The vegan pumpkin pie last year-never again...we make raspberry crisp or something that tastes less different that expected when made vegan.

Strawberry Rhubarb Cobbler
My family loved this. I added an extra cup of strawberries out of the garden, sugar was just right. Made it vegan easily with vegan butter.

Irish Soda Bread
great-I veganized it by substituting equivalent wet volume of rice milk with a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar for the egg and dairy products. loved the caraway seeds, nice touch.

New Duchess Spice Cake with Maple Buttercream Frosting
I had trouble with the cake sticking to the bottom of the pan, use parchment paper, I had altered it to be vegan, so not completely a fair test of this recipe. I sort of pushed it together and used the excellent frosting with vegan butter. I also added freshly grated ginger and a touch of molasses and it was very tasty, just a mess to look at.
