I didn't use instant yeast, so I proofed it first in the warm water in one bowl, and melted the butter and milk together in a small sauce pot then removed from heat to cool slightly. I used 1/2 whole wheat and 1/2 white flour. I mixed together the flour, sugar and salt, then mixed in the milk/butter mixture, then the yeast/water, and lastly the egg.
I kneaded the dough for approx 5 mins, then placed in a lightly oiled bowl, covered with a warm, damp cloth and allowed to rise in a warm place for about an hour. Punched it down, and allowed it to rise again for another hour. Punched it down, seperated it into rolls, and flattened slightly on a lightly greased baking sheet, then covered with the cloth and allowed it to rise slightly for another 20 mins or so.
They only took me 10 mins to bake and they were delicious.
I am a vegan, so I used soy milk, Earth Balance buttery sticks, cane sugar and Kingsmill egg replacer, mixed per box directions, equiv to one egg.
