Good recipe. However, I too reduced the amount of potatoes to 4 lbs. But in doing so, I think that it makes the dish a bit too salty. Canned soup is already salty, plus the ham, and then it calls for salt. I would suggest not adding any extra salt to this recipe and just stick with seasoning it with pepper. I would also like to try not adding the stick of butter to the recipe - I don't think it would do anything to the integrity of the cream mixture if it were omitted.
