So, I moved to a new city, new state, new geographical region this past June. I switched careers, went back to school, and in general completely traded in my old life for a new one. And now, I don't know anyone, except for my coworkers and fellow students. For those of you who know me from AR,… MORE

Butter has featured prominently in my life. It has made me laugh, and cry. Here's a few favorite butter memories: 1. Getting caught as a 5 year old - one stick of butter gone, another mostly gone. I would stand at the open fridge door and nosh butter til my cheeks puffed out like a chipmunks.… MORE

Where have I been? What in the world have I been doing? Rest assured online community of friends, my "real world" friends have been asking the same questions for just as many months as you. I believe that the last sighting of the missing AZ was seen at Thanksgiving. She pulled out the big… MORE

When I found out that I was getting a box of FiberOne cereal in the mail I was a little nervous. I don't eat cold cereal because I don't drink milk.  Some cereals are good dry, but I don't go out of my way to identify which ones they are. Thankfully I wasn't supposed to eat a bowlful of these… MORE

So, every year I struggle with whether or not I will be making any resolutions. But this year, I have decided to go back, and revisit the idea of resolutions. Mostly my decision has come because I am making some major changes this year, and I want to make sure that I am making changes with a… MORE

Thanksgiving is quite simply my favorite holiday, and the only way to make it better would be to add fireworks. But really, not even that is necessary, I just really love fireworks....Back to Thanksgiving. I am the only one of my siblings that isn't married and doesn't have kids, so T-day is… MORE

I cook from scratch most of the time, and I've been trying very hard to lose some weight, and get in shape. My doc told me he would give me one year to bring my cholesterol down without meds and I am 6 months into it. The thing is that my cholesterol isn't awful, but my genes are terrible,… MORE

This summer has been everything I didn't plan, and now it's over. I am unemployed, and school let out in May. I was going to paint my bedroom, sell (or at least organize) the oodles of baseball cards that were abandoned in my attic and spend time with my niece and nephews. I was going to have… MORE

I haven't had the time to blog about our food adventures lately because I have been so busy. I have been unemployed for 8 months now, but I was lucky to get some contract work in June. Since taking these assignments, I have been busy busy busy. For several weeks the man had to cook since I… MORE

So, here it is – my first food blog. I was wondering what I would write about, and I realized that I should write about what I know, and what I eat. When I became unemployed last winter, I had to rethink how I cook, and what I eat, so that I could fit it in my budget. All winter long I… MORE

About Me
I love to garden, and I love to cook what's in my garden. I grew up vegetarian and went through many styles of diet until I ended up where I am today. I love vegetarian food, seafood and poultry. I love to try new things and every year in the garden I rearrange what I'm growing - one of these days I'll find the perfect balance for me.
My favorite things to cook
I love to bake bread and desserts, and since the man joined me in the house with two crazy dogs, I get to bake a lot more. My friends and neighbors still end up the lucky recipients for anything he doesn't scarf down though. Cajun and southern food is a particular favorite, I never met a grit or a fricasee that I didn't LOVE!
My favorite family cooking traditions
I am the family baker, so I get to play around with desserts every year for all of the holidays. I am not allowed to skip the brandied pumpkin pies for thanksgiving or christmas, and we have to have lemon something for easter. I also make huge batches of apple butter every winter and that's become my favoite part of fall.
My cooking triumphs
Hosting Thanksgiving last year I served 12 with no assistance. I made the soup, rolls, salads, sides, turkey and desserts. It was a treat for me to be able to do that for my family instead of the normal potluck that we do. No one else had to lift a finger and I got to do what I love!
My cooking tragedies
I have a few, but last year's jalapeno fume cloud takes the cake. I was making a jalapeno pickling liquid and forgot to turn the vent fan on. I ended up having the get my dog and leave the house for several hours while the vapors diminished! Thank goodness I did not throw the habaneros in the pot too!
