About this Cook
I just recently got married and live with my husband, dog and act in a wonderful rehabbed home in a historic neighborhood near downtown. Many of my friends and co-workers tease me about how much I love cake-- of any kind. When my department has retirement/going away parties for people, I'll go even if I don't know the person, just to have a piece of cake! Sad, but true...
My favorite things to cook
Anything I can bake: coffee cakes, cookies, brownies, but especially-- cakes! My current favorite cake is Snickerdoodle. One of my favorite quick, easy, and delicious things to cook is tilapia with onions, capers, lemon, sage, chives, and a little cooking spray in a foil packet. Pop it in the oven and in 15 minutes, dinner!
My favorite family cooking traditions
My dad was always trying new recipes and adding them to our family favorites. One of his best additions was Chicken with Pears. He makes the best lasagna, too. I also love my mom's homemade spaghetti sauce and my grandma's recipe for Pasties (meat pies). During Lent my mom used to make codfish and polenta, which I hated as a kid, but like a lot now. Mostly, I just love that cooking in my family is a family thing--everyone does it together, or stays in the kitchen and keeps the cooks company.
My cooking triumphs
Last year my husband and I hosted a Christmas dinner party for 10 friends (12 including us!), and we made my Aunt Kathy's porketta recipe (with my dad's modifications). I had never made something like that before, and it was a hit! My husband especially loved it!
My cooking tragedies
I've had some disappointments, but nothing I'd call a tragedy...yet.

Banana Cake VI
A strange recipe (bake at low temp and freeze? but the submitter insisted, so I did) but very good! My four stars may have to do with the fact that I didn't measure the bananas, I could have had more than cup and a half, so my cake turned out a little more dense, but still very moist. I made almond buttercream frosting to top it and that was yummy!

Mountain Apple Cake
My co-worker brought this cake in to work, it was so good I asked for the recipe. It's heavenly! She did say she'd cut the sugar down next time (it is very rich and can cover the apple flavor), but the mixture that you pour in to the cake is so delicious and gives the cake this melted coffee-cake topping crunchiness on the edges. Also, she added milk to the icing, since the mayo and vanilla aren't enough to make the glaze.
