About this Cook
Former bike messenger, currently hair stylist. Trying to branch out with my cooking. 5 years ago I could only make pasta to now I have attempted pretty much everything expect canning and gingerbread. Lives with two hungry roommates who are always willing to try new recipes or dishes I might cook up and also has a boyfriend who will always take leftovers.
My favorite things to cook
breads, veggie dishes, brownies
My favorite family cooking traditions
My family is from the Ukraine and I loved helping my family cook Ukrainian food as a kid, and now doing it as an adult and sharing it with friends who have never had it.
My cooking triumphs
First (with no help from aunts) batch of cabbage and leek pirogi. Baking my own yeast bread. Various desserts. Pretty much the fact I went from being someone who grew up in a house with no one who regularly cooked to someone who prepares everything from scratch.

Sweet Dinner Rolls
I was really disappointed because these started out great. I didn't use a bread machine but started the yeast in the water, milk, sugar and then let the dough rise for 45 minutes. Everything was fine at this point, nice rise etc, but then from here...it all went downhill. Rolled into crescents, let sit for another hour....no rise at all. Left alone for another 30 minutes...nothing. Tried baking a few anyways but turned out heavy, dense and way too sweet. Not my cup of tea for dinner rolls...

Jay's Signature Pizza Crust
Followed as written but used whole wheat flour. Okay on the first try. Will make again as it was good dough but with regular flour and do a butter crust since well, I'm a south side chicago girl and thats how pizza should be.

Black Bean and Corn Quesadillas
Very good for a quick lunch or a snack. Left out the brown sugar, used bottled spicy salsa rojo, added adobo, extra pepper flakes (i like spice) and a bit of cumin. Used corn tortillas and queso quesadilla. Dipped with crema surprimo and it was defiantly muy rico!
