Mafioso Chocolate Cake

Reviewed: Sep. 9, 2010
This cake is so good! I was looking for a cake with the richness and density of cakes made with butter, and the moistness of cakes made with oil. This is it, so rich, dense and moist! I wondered about the cooking time/temp, but it was spot on in my oven. I did replace the boiling water with hot brewed coffee, because I always do that with chocolate cakes that call for boiling water, it deepens the chocolate flavor, and I threw in maybe a 1/4 tsp salt, because it seemed strange to me to havea recipe without it, although I don't know if that changed much or not. I used the Rich Chocolate Frosting recipe on this site, which looks very similar to the one given here, but we love that one so much I had to use it.

Rich Chocolate Frosting

Reviewed: Sep. 7, 2010
Perfect! This recipe is so good, and it is the favorite of everyone in my family. My husband likes really rich, chocolatey frosting, and I can't stand super sweet frosting, and this suits us both perfectly. I do scale back a bit on the sugar, and add a dash of salt, but that's just a matter of taste. I never use any other chocolate frosting, this is good enough to eat with a spoon!

Best Lemonade Ever

Reviewed: May 2, 2010
This was very good. I followed the recipe exactly the first time, and really liked it. However, it is more sweet than tart, and my family likes tart better, although that's just preference. So, I now make it using 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 cup sugar. Sometimes I use a little less water, to make it a little stronger. But the recipe is great as is, and it's very easy to tweak to specific likes. Sometimes I sub 1/2 cup lime juice for the lemon juice, which is great. It's also amazing frozen and turned into a slushy.

Lebanese-Style Red Lentil Soup

Reviewed: Jan. 19, 2010
Perfect! I'm so happy I found this. I've been looking for a recipe for a soup I had at a restaurant, and this is it! I doubled the garlic, cumin and cayenne pepper, because I love spicy things. I used dried cilantro instead of fresh, 'cause it's what I had. Also, I have no lemons, so I skipped the juice, although I KNOW it's a must. Still great without it, but it will be even better with it. My three year old is gobbling it up! Thanks so much JENP1!

Plum Bread

Reviewed: Sep. 16, 2009
So good! I made this twice - once I peeled and pureed 12 plums for a double recipe, the second time I simply squashed 12 plums in my hand and took the pits out. Both times it was delicious, and it's less work not peeling them. I also was worried that 1 tsp. of cloves would be too much, but it was perfect, and I don't usually like cloves. We had an abundance of plums, and I've made several desserts with them, but this was everyone's favorite. I've been asked for the recipe over and over again. I think I will give loaves of this out as Christmas gifts. The glaze really makes it, don't skip it!

World's Best Lasagna

Reviewed: Dec. 30, 2007
This was a very good. I change it a bit when I make it, I use 1 3/4 lb spicy italian sausage, no ground beef. I add 1 cup red wine (whatever kind we're drinking that night) to the sausage/onion/garlic after it is browned and let the liquid reduce by half before continuing with the rest of the recipe. I followed other reviewers advice and simply soaked the noodles in hot water before cooking the whole thing and they turned out perfect.
