About this Cook
I'm a freelance classical musician who also enjoys teaching music. I'm also a self-confessed 'foodie' and LOVE to eat (as well as cook). I grew up in a family that really valued discovering and enjoying different kinds of food.
My favorite things to cook
I tend to cook a lot of Asia-influenced dishes, but am always trying out new recipes. Although I'm not vegetarian, I enjoy cooking and eating a lot of vegetarian meals. As much as I love cooking, I enjoy baking even more. Christmas is one of my favourite times of the year because I make a large variety of cookies as gifts for friends and family.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mom is a great cook! She is Chinese Canadian and one of the greatest traditions we have is that at Christmas, instead of filling the turkey with stuffing, she fills it with a Chinese marinade, which she then uses as a base for the gravy. Also, she makes an incredible sticky rice every Christmas. I have great memories of helping my mom fill wonton wrappers when I was young...She also makes delicious roasts and is an amazing baker.
My cooking triumphs
My mother, although she's a great cook, was always scared of baking bread, so I was worried that I wouldn't be able to do it. However, I have succeeded in making several pretty good loaves of bread. The no-knead bread recipe is the best (and easiest) I've come across so far). I've become comfortable at tweaking recipes or creating my own "recipe" for many things...which I think is one of my greatest "cooking triumphs". Also, I've been told by several people that I should try selling my chocolate chip cookies:)
My cooking tragedies
My boyfriend loves baba ganoush but doesn't like eggplant in general...I tried making baba ganoush and it didn't turn out with a creamy texture; instead it had a bit of a slimy texture. Needless to say, he didn't like it and we ended up adding some other ingredients and turning it into a pasta sauce (which was actually pretty good!). Also, I have not had great success with chickpea curries...anybody have a suggestion for a good recipe?

Apple Bavarian Torte
This is a delicious and easy dessert. I suggest pressing the crust 1 1\2 " up the sides of the springform pan, and using almond extract instead of vanilla in the crust (goes well with the almonds in the torte). I also slightly cooked the apples in the microwave for 2 min or so, before I mixed them with cinnamon and sugar. Lastly, after the torte cooled, I used a glaze of strained nectarine jam heated and mixed with a tsp of water to give it a nice glossy finish.

Dee's Health Bread
This is really good and flavourful bread! I have a bread machine, but (when I have the time) like to make bread by hand...and this recipe was a good choice. It is moist, slightly sweet and so soft on the inside! I cut the recipe in 1/2 and made 3 loaves. I only have one loaf pan, so I made 2 into french bread-style loaves. Turned out great!!

Tomatillo Soup
After reading the reviews, I decided to add a can of black beans (when I added the tomatillos)to the soup. I also added about 2 teaspoons of cumin and 4 hot peppers instead of 2. The result was a delicious, tangy and (not too)spicy soup!
