Sweet Potato Pie VII

Reviewed: Nov. 23, 2007
My mother and I do not particularly care for pumpkin pie and we wanted to find and alternative for Thanksgiving. Our whole family likes sweet potatoes (we usually bake them and eat them like baked potatoes), so we thought we'd give this a try. This pie was an overwhelming success!!!! It is nice and creamy and quite delicious - we've found a new family tradition. Thank you!!! I just wanted to add that I made one of the these pies to take to a work potluck - and I am now being told that I am the "official" sweet potato pie maker for our potlucks! One of my co-workers liked it so much that she has had me make one for her family the last 2 Thanksgivings (and she comes from a true southern family - not too bad for a northern girl, I must say!!)

Clam Chowder III

Reviewed: Dec. 13, 2008
My mother (who grew up in New England and has tried lots of clam chowder over the years) said that this was the best chowder she's ever had!! I did modify the recipe a bit - I added 3/4 of a bottle of clam juice in addition to that reserved from the canned clams. I also used fat free half and half. Finally, I added some crisp bacon when I added the half and half. It was wonderful and soooo rich!! I will definitely make this again - maybe for our chowder cookoff next year.

Tender Breaded Turkey Cutlets

Reviewed: Dec. 13, 2008
My family enjoyed these, however, I've got to find a way to keep them from sticking while frying. It was very frustrating to find all of the crust on the bottom of the frying pan - especially when it tasted so awesome!

Rich Chocolate Brownies

Reviewed: Feb. 3, 2009
I found this recipe right before Thanksgiving in 2006 - and have been making it ever since!! I was looking for a recipe that would give me brownies similar to a type that was carried by the cafe at Borders. The Borders brownies had a layer of chocolate and white chocolate candy. So I modified this recipe. When I am putting the brownies in the pan, I spread a thin layer of brownie mix on the bottom of the pan. Then, I sprinkle semi-sweet chocolate chips and white chocolate chips on the thin layer of brownie mix. I top the chips with the rest of the brownie mixture. My family absolutely loves the brownies this way (they are awesome warmed in the microwave!!). The only problem I had in my modification was that the brownies would stick to the pan. So, instead of greasing the pan, I use parchment paper - they come out perfectly every time. I will be using this recipe for years to come.

Cream Cheese Sugar Cookies

Reviewed: Feb. 3, 2009
I wasn't too sure if I liked these at first - but they really were delicious and pretty easy to make. My daughter and my mother really enjoyed them. The cookies stayed nice and soft. Since they were not too sweet, they went well with frosting. I will definitely be adding these to my holiday baking list.

These cookies were absolutely delicious and easy. I had never made gingerbread cookies before and was a little nervous. We loved these so much that we froze some for later!!There is nothing like the smell of gingerbread baking. . .

Dr. Michael's Yeasted Cornbread

Reviewed: Feb. 13, 2009
My family loved this bread - it needed nothing more than a little butter. My daughter (who has never been a bread eater) ate this right away and asked for more. The recipe made a beautiful loaf of bread - it rose and baked above the pan. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe, Dr. Michael!

Three Ingredient Peanut Butter Cookies

Reviewed: Feb. 13, 2009
I just made these with my 2 1/2 year old daughter - what an easy recipe (she loves helping mommy bake) to do with her. I added 1/4 tsp of vanilla - that was my only modification. Delicious peanut butter cookies!!! I never make them from scratch when I make them with Kisses at Christmas time (I always use a mix to save time) - I will definitely use this recipe when I make them this Christmas!!!

Oven Beef Stew

Reviewed: Feb. 13, 2009
My mother was going to make stew today, but she'd been in bed sick all day. She tried to tell me which cookbook to look in for her recipe, but I decided to look on allrecipes for my own recipe. After I had chosen this recipe and started making it, I looked at my mom's old recipe book - It was almost exactly the same recipe!!! A classic, easy recipe for true comfort food. I did add a small can of tomato sauce and some mushrooms, but left the rest of the recipe intact.

Artichoke Chicken

Reviewed: Mar. 25, 2009
My family loved this recipe. The first time I made it, I used the marinated artichokes and half mayonnaise and half fat free sour cream. When I made it tonight, I used plain artichoke hearts (canned), 1 tsp of minced garlic and half mayonnaise and half greek yogurt. I think when I make it again (and I will make it again!) I will use just the greek yogurt (or maybe just a 1/4 cup of mayo and the rest yogurt). It was awesome!

King Cake

Reviewed: Mar. 25, 2009
I was very pleased with my first attempt to make a King Cake -years ago when my sister lived in NOLA, she sent us a king cake. I never dreamed it was this complex to make. I loved the lemon icing, as did my family. I will definitely make this again. I did use a double recipe of the filling - it definitely needed it.

Shrimp Egg Salad

Reviewed: Aug. 30, 2009
This was easy and delicious. I did add some diced celery to give it a little crunch. I plan on leaving out the dill the next time I make it. We served it on fresh croissants and it made a wonderful meal for a hot summer night.

Dallas-Style Sloppy Joes

Reviewed: Oct. 10, 2009
I did make a few changes. I did not add the bell pepper and I substituted tomato sauce and tomato paste for the ketchup. But it turned out quite delicious! We've always made my mom's old standbye recipe, and it was good. But even she said this was excellent. We will definitely use this one again.

Mom's Coleslaw

Reviewed: Oct. 10, 2009
Absolutely love this recipe. It is so easy and so delicious - I did use red wine vinegar, because I was out of cider vinegar, but it didn't really make a difference, other than the pink tint! We have already had this twice and will continue to use it.

Curried Chicken 'N' Broccoli

Reviewed: Nov. 12, 2009
This was a very simple, yet delicious, recipe!! I used fresh broccoli and the rest of a roast chicken that I had made earlier this week. I was out of cream of chicken soup, so I substituted cream of mushroom. Finally, I did not add any salt and I used a whole teaspoon of curry (and it was not overpowering at all). It took a little persuading to get my 3 year old to try it, but she did tell me she "loved" it, in the end. I will definitely be using this recipe again.

Critter Fritter Casserole

Reviewed: Dec. 12, 2009
This recipe was awesome! I only made one change (well, besides following the instructions from the other comments about putting the cheese directly on top of the ground beef), I used green chiles instead of jalapenos - wasn't quite as spicy as it could have been. We served it with sour cream - I think we'll add a bed of lettuce next time. I'm also wondering if I reduce the amount of ground beef and substitute some refried beans, if the flavor would change drastically or if it would just help hold the bottom together a little more. My daughter wasn't crazy about the corn bread part (but she's not a bread eater) but loved the meat. Oh, and, instead of using a boxed mix of corn bread, I mixed up 1/2 of a batch of "Homesteader Cornbread" (it's another favorite recipe of ours from allrecipes) and poured that on top - absolutely delish!! Thank you for your wonderful creation!

Reuben Pizza

Reviewed: Feb. 7, 2011
Absolutely delicious!! We had this for our mini Super Bowl Party and it was a hit. If you like reubens, you will love this pizza. It is rich, so a little goes a long way. We used ham instead of corned beef, but it was the same concept. We will definitely have this again!
