I picked Jan (Pelicangal) up at the Atlanta airport at 7am Wed. morning and we were off to GDerr's house! Meeting the Derrs was like walking into "Family"! They welcomed us with open arms, lots of hugs and kisses...Southern Hospitality at its finest! Gary and Clare live about an hour and a half east of Atlanta in Columbus, Ga, in a beautiful Southern mini-mansion in the historic part of town. They took us around the neighborhood to see all the beautiful homes in their area...It was amazing!
They have a beautiful home and Clare has an eye for antiques! She collects antique purse so you find displays of her collection all thru the house...very cool! Gary had worked all morning on a Seafood Gaspacho and Clare made a Mandarin Orange Salad with fresh Bleu cheese crumbles,
Yummy!

I have known Jan (Pelicangal) for 3 years on AR and she surprized me with her British accent! Who knew she was born in England...not me! But she has been a US citizen for 40 years and she brought us to tears when she told the story of becoming a citizen.

That night Gary took us out to a popular local seafood restaurant, Rosehill Cafe and Oyster Bar. We shared 2 dozen raw oysters and had a ton of fried seafood of all kinds!

Look at Gary's fried catfish platter...he ate it all too!

After dinner, we went back to the house, had a cocktail, and then us girls decided to call it a night...poor Jan hadn't had any sleep in 36 hours because she had flown all night on Tuesday, Poor Gal! More to come........

Wow! Catfish like I've never seen it! Well, born & raised in Colorado... Sounds like such a nice time. Although, gotta admit that my favorite thing to fish for is catfish. River trout are OK. Catfish are just more fun to go after. Vicariously is the word, so much fun to look at pics & read about this. Thanx.

folks we are empty nesters now.claire has done mucho work since we've lived here and it could use more. i want a lake home, but this is kinda the family home now...so whatever claire wants, claire gets. i live on the one corner of the couch, remote in hand ( college football, nfl, major league baseball.) but, the kitchen is MY domain...besides 1 of the bathrooms. i'm a happy camper. thx ya, but this is not a manision. it's claire's home, she just allows me to cook here, lol.

About Me
Down here in Central Coast Florida since late Aug. 2012. I still cook and bake and its so good to be around family again!
My favorite things to cook
There is just one of me but I do cook dinner almost every night. I love easy dishes on the nights I really don't feel like cooking. Grandmommy Capps lived in Rocky Mount, NC....Sundays were a holiday! Dinner was at 2pm. Leftovers were snacks later(dark thirty)....she was a great biscuit and piemaker. Being the oldest of 23 grandchildren, I was the BEST dishwasher! Hand wash everything in a washpan! I know....you've never heard of it??? You need one to play as your wash sink, and then you rinse in the kitchen sink.....It was fun.....no air dry either....someone had to dry ALL the dishes! I love my Sis for that!
My favorite family cooking traditions
We have ham, blackeyed peas, collard greens, and corn muffins on New Year's Day for good luck! Peanut blossums are my favorite cookie for Christmas!
My cooking triumphs
"Banana Crumb Muffins" were delicious & gorgeous, looked store-bought!
My cooking tragedies
I have left the neck(in the bag) in the turkey in the past 5 years! I should know better! Always rememember to check BOTH ends of the turkey before you cook it! I'm Blonde...Sheesh!!
