Excellent - this is the epitome of comfort food, and there's no better way to use leftover mashed potatoes. Like others suggested, I cooked the onion with some garlic, and omitted the beef broth and used a combination of 1/4 c Worcestershire, 1 cup water,1 packet of brown gravy mix, and a splash of port for a little more complexity. I also added a bag of frozen peas - which I think gave the dish some much needed color and texture. Very, very good.
