I made this recipe for a fancy birthday cake and at first I was really skeptical. The batter was SOOooo runny. Several reviews had talked about the same issue, but it was even more than I expected. HOWEVER, it baked up beautifully. It didn't get a rounded top like most baked items, but that was great for me because I didn't have to level off the cakes to layer them. They were nice and flat and uniform. I didn't make the frosting, but by looking at the recipe, I would think it would be way too sweet for how sweet the cake already is. I made buttercream for the birthday cake, but I think even cool whip would suffice.
