Chocolate Mayonnaise Cake II

Reviewed: May 23, 2015
This is a delicious recipe as it is presented, second time I used miracle whip, as did my aunt... was cheaper than mayo (at the time 1933) and no vanilla extract - expensive and hard to come by back then. Still delicious, albeit a different flavor, to be sure. Note: Do not use DUTCH-processed baking cocoa with this recipe! Not enough acid to offset the taste of the baking soda and creates a extremely heavy cake. The concept of this recipe (my opinion only, of course) is to re-create the taste, texture and flavor of a depression-era treat.

Traditional Sauerbraten

Reviewed: May 11, 2015
Delicious recipe as written. My Oma's recipe, had the following tiny differences. Marinade: sliced onions, not chopped. She added a crushed clove of garlic, an extra ½ cup of both water & vinegar, used freshly cracked black PEPPERCORNS and added ½ teaspoon WHOLE allspice with the whole cloves and bay leaves. She always said: Keep things big, so straining them out is easier. Oma used a covered crock & a plate to marinate the meat in the ice box (I use a gigantic plastic bag in the fridge, today.) She started sauerbraten marinating on a Monday... made an excellent Sunday dinner with red cabbage, potato dumplings & apple strudel.

Easy Lemon Cake

Reviewed: Dec. 24, 2012
Easy to put together and bakes up beautifully! I followed the recipe as stated above and baked using a greased 10" tube pan. Done in 50 minutes. Used 1 cup powdered sugar, 2.5 T lemon juice plus 2 drops natural lemon extract. Using a bamboo skewer to poke the cake on the top, the cake was glazed while hot. Moist and yummy! Thanks!

Black Bean Brownies/Cake

Reviewed: Oct. 27, 2011
Tip 1: Make sure to use the beans. water, salt kind cans. Do not use refried or cans that have garlic and other flavorings - do not create a good-tasting product. Just read the lable. Tip 2: Drain AND rinse beans thoroughly Tip 3: Flourless baked product will have a different texture. Be prepared for that. Tip 4: Use your blender for much longer than you think necessary to create a smooth-pouring batter. These were delicious as made to recipe as brownies. I doubled the recipe and added 2 tsp. baking powder. Baked in 10 inch round springform pan about 50 min - till pick came out clean. Made it into a black forest type cake with cherry pie filling inside and topped with whipped cream and with more cherry filling. Everyone loved it at my 22nd anniversary party! A definite keeper! Many thanks!

Garbanzo Bean Chocolate Cake (Gluten Free!)

Reviewed: Oct. 5, 2011
First batch had a few beans remaining... and spouse actually thought I added nuts to the recipe! (Hmmm... interesting.) Blenderizing much longer than I anticipated really made this recipe work well... so rich and yummy... I had to keep reminding myself (and others) that these were gluten-free treats!

Reviewed: Dec. 1, 2007
Easy to make with good results @ 375"F for 8.5 min! Second batch, I simmered the raisins for about 2 minutes, then I added 1/4 Tsp sea salt, and 4 Tablespoons molasses. Added 1/2 cup chopped pecans to dry ingredients. Delicious!
