About this Cook
I am married with two kids. I grew up as an only child with a single mother---one who cooked maybe once or twice a year. I ate fast food, frozen dinners, and anything out of a can. I vowed that I would learn to cook. My favorite thing is to cook for my family and for company. Seeing people enjoy the food I made makes me happy. I still have a lot to learn about cooking. Now, though, the kitchen no longer terrifies me. I get lost in chopping, simmering, and smelling all the great foods that combine to make the house smell good. There is nothing home-ier to me than this.
My favorite things to cook
The slow cooker is my best friend no matter what the season.
My cooking triumphs
Homemade soup (who knew how much better it is than canned?) Meatloaf that my kids actually ask for Learning to use a wide variety of seasonings
My cooking tragedies
Painstakingly chopping vegetables and meat for my first crock pot stew and forgetting to plug it in before leaving in the morning. First time using garlic and I thought one clove was a whole head---the lasagna was inedible and my apartment stunk like garlic for a week.

Shepherd's Pie VI
This was my first try with shepherd's pie. It tastes simple and was cheap to make. It is pretty heavy, but I guess that's what it is supposed to be. My husband loved it. I did end up dirtying a lot of dishes. This almost seemed like a food you would make for someone with no teeth, since everything is pretty much mashed. I guess I prefer some variety in textures and more seasonings, but maybe this could be tweaked to please both me and the hubby!

All-Day Apple Butter
I cooked this longer than recipe called for, since it didn't seem thick enough. I cut it in half to try it out, which made two 8oz jars full. I like that it made the house smell good and that I knew all the ingredients added (as opposed to stuff in stores.) I am just not sure I'll go to the trouble since I can let the Amish folks do it and buy theirs near here!

Quick and Easy Chicken
Nice quick chicken recipe for a weeknight. I doubled the sauce, per advice from previous reviewers. It was good, but I thought it was much too sweet---closer to a syrup than a sauce. My husband has a sweet tooth and loved the sauce. He said I should make just the sauce to keep on hand for dipping. Next time, though, I will reduce the sugar content when making this again.
