Newly married, setting up house, and working hard at honing my green thumb! My husband loves to eat, I love to cook, and the dog thinks the kitchen is her domain. Silly dog!
My favorite things to cook
I love baking and experimenting with low-fat ingredients. I'm big into whole wheat flour at the moment, and substituting yogurt for oil and butter. I enjoy stir-fry, grilling, and scaling back recipes to serve just two. Cooking for a crowd is always a welcomed challenge!
My favorite family cooking traditions
Sugar cookie decorating at Christmas with my family; mom's date nut bread for Thanksgiving; chicken wings on New Year's; and BBQ ribs on my birthday
My cooking triumphs
In my book, a triumph is anytime someone asks me for the recipe to one of the dishes I've made! I love gathering recipes and experimenting with recipes of my own. I just like being in the kitchen... :o)
My cooking tragedies
I set out to bake an anniversary cake for my parents when I was in junior high. I've never been a fan of doing dishes, so to save myself some pan scrubbing I poured a two-layer cake's worth of batter into a single 8"x2" round pan. Needless to say, the batter expanded up and over the sides of the pan and all over the electric heating element. What a mess!

Slow Cooker Texas Smoked Beef Brisket
The rub is quite versatile! I added a bit more liquid smoke to the sauce and used Sweet Baby Ray's Original. Cooked on HIGH for 5 hours (1-1/2 lb. brisket) till fork-tender. To the juices I whisked in 1/2 cup ketchup and 1/2 cup apple butter and reduced by half over medium heat on the stovetop. Delicious!

Goldbrick Sundae Sauce
A decent flavor, but did not live up to promise of hardening "as soon as it hits the cold ice cream." I'll keep looking for a Magic Shell stand-in that I can make at home.

Thin Mint Crackers
My husband and I enjoyed these immensely -- and experimented a bit too. We liked the taste of Keebler Club Crackers (multi-grain is what I had in the pantry) as well as the Nabisco Famous Chocolate Wafer for the "cookie" base. The buttery flavor of the Club cracker with the mint was surprisingly good, and the texture great! For the chocolate, we tried melted Andes baking chips first as well as melted chocolate CHUNKS w/ extract. Both had good mint taste, but we felt the Andes tasted more like an original Thin Mint and were easier to work with. Excellent!
