Apple Pie by Grandma Ople

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2012
I am rating it 3-stars as to me a recipe should be successful by following the instructions. I was in a hurry and didn't have time to read the reviews first. I should have trusted my instincts instead of trusting the 5 stars. I started with 6 Granny Smith Apples and even that was too much so we ended up eating almost a whole one. The instructions indicated that I should make the caramel sauce first, which I did, and it looked perfect and I tried to keep it simmering on low, but by the time I was ready to pour it over the pie, it had become thick and globby. I saw that some was going through the pie so I hoped that it would still work. I was inclined to not put it in such a hot oven, but again I followed the instructions. I left the kitchen for a few minutes to check the reviews on the site, and when I returned I found my kitchen was full of smoke! I lost a lot of the caramel sauce as the high heat caused it to roll off of the pie and all over the oven! I immediately lowered the heat. I guess it's one way to force me to clean my oven, which I did as soon as the pie was cooked! By this time I had read enough of the reviews that when I took the pie from the oven,I pushed the top of it gently down. Overall it didn't look bad and I still took it to our Christmas dinner. Amazingly it tasted good despite my problems with it. Next time I will slice the apples first and mix most of the caramel with them first, plus add some cinnamon.

Simple Turkey Chili

Reviewed: Feb. 11, 2012
I made this recipe tonight and it was delicious. After browning the turkey I added the chopped onion and about a cup of chopped celery to the turkey and cooked them until they were soft, then added a can of chicken broth instead of the water. I also added extra a can of chile beans, a can of corn and a can of mushrooms, all drained. Instead of the cayenne pepper I put in several shakes of tabasco sauce. I simmered it for a couple of hours but it still wasn't as thick as we are used to. Next time I would cut back on the water or chicken broth, unless you like it on the runny side. Good served open pita bread and with a side salad.

Slow Cooker Beef Stew IV

Reviewed: Nov. 25, 2011
This was delicious. My own remark would be that when adding red wine to it, to be sure that it is very dry and not sweet. I had on hand some red dry marsala, which is a sweet wine, and it made the stew too sweet. Otherwise it would have been perfect.

Apple Pie

Reviewed: Nov. 25, 2011
I made this pie for Thanksgiving and it was the best apple pie I have ever made. I replaced the brown sugar with 1/4 cup brown sugar/splenda to reduce the calories. The pie was juicy and just the right amount of sweetness.

Moist and Chewy Peanut Butter Cookies

Reviewed: Nov. 20, 2007
I tried these cookies using the tips of others. I used "real" peanut butter, real butter, and reduced the sugar to 3/4 cup brown sugar. I also placed a chocolate kiss on top of each as soon as they came out of the oven. My cookies look lovely but are tasteless, dry and not sweet enough(and I generally find desserts TOO sweet!). Also, they were burning before 10 minutes was up! Next time I will make them according to the recipe!
