Mini Cupcake Cupcake Toppers

One evening, while browsing Pinterest (the most addicting website after All Recipes in my foodie/crafty/inspiration-seeking opinion), I came across a picture of what I think is probably the cutest thing you could possibly do to a cupcake, cake, cookie... or basically any sort of decorated baked good, I suppose.

The picture originated from a blog called Confessions of a Cookbook Queen and I was immediately obsessed with the idea featured in the blog post: Cupcake Cupcake Toppers. Her pictures were so lovely that I knew I just had to try it. Always looking for an excuse to bake, I decided to whip up a batch of Chocolate Surprise Cupcakes and a bowl of Creamy Frosting (both recipes from AR) just so I would have something to put these cute little things on top of.

The best part (aside from the unbearable cuteness) is the sheer simplicity of the idea. To create these adorable cupcake toppers all you need are Miniature Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, frosting, and any sort of decorations you can dream up. You simply remove the peanut butter cup from the outer foil wrapping, leaving it in the paper cup. Instant cupcake! Why, oh why, did I never realize how much a Reese's Cup resembles a teeny tiny cupcake?  To think of all the cupcakes that have left my kitchen unadorned by a mini cupcake topper! The shame!

After removing the foil, all you have left to do is pipe a little swirl of frosting onto the Reese's Cup and decorate as desired. On these particular cupcakes, I used a Wilton 2A tip for the actual cupcake frosting and a Wilton 12 for the mini cupcake. I like the way that the mini cupcake swirl mimics the larger swirl, just as the heart sprinkles go from small to tiny between the cupcake and the topper. I also used these toppers on some cupcakes that I did with 2D and 1M tips and those turned out great too.

A huge thank you to the author of Confessions of a Cookbook Queen for the amazing idea! I am always so inspired by people who come up with these extraordinarily creative ideas; maybe one day I'll think up one of my own! :)

Way too cute! Isn't this one of those things that makes you say, "Why didn't i I think of that?" How come I didn't look at a peanut butter cup and visualize a mini cupcake?!

[How funny! I was wondering why this pic wasn't your avatar - glad you changed it (=]

Glad you guys all agree about the cuteness factor! I'm a sucker for anything mini! Anything that is supposed to be bigger that is made tiny is an instant "adorable" in my book :)

LOLOLOLOLOL @ Barb & babies.....but back to this, way too darn cute. Love the idea and the simplicity of it all. Now I wished I would have seen these the night before Valentines Day when my daughter and I decorated 100 cupcakes for a project she was involved in.

Feb. 21, 2012 10:36 pm
Oh, Paula! Just the decorated peanut butter cups would have been cute for either your tea party or your chocolate party - little "mini 'cupcakes'"

I went out and bought mini peanutbutter cups and looked for the Wilton tips. Found 12. Have 1M. Couldn't find 2D and 2A. I am decorating challenged anyhow so it probably doesnt matter that i couldnt find tips. So I was thinking I'll just stop bye and steal yours (the cupcakes, not the tips ) ~ that would be so much easier. ;)

Feb. 22, 2012 12:27 pm
As a self-professed non-decorator, I am totally with you Allie (=

The thought of icing on a peanut butter cup is way too yucky for me. It's a cute look, but I can't imagine eating it. It just make my face cringe. As a professional baker though - they will make a mint.

Mar. 5, 2012 8:43 pm
Well, I don't imagine that people would actually eat them... I certainly didn't put them on there with that intention! :)

About Me
I'm in my late twenties living in NW Illinois in a beautiful, quaint small town. I love to play in the dirt; vegetable and flower gardening are my favorite summertime hobbies. I work full-time managing a small company here in our town and my husband and I also own and operate our own car audio business. We are the proud parents of two adorable Patterdale Terriers (Layla & Tucker) who keep us well entertained. I've been blessed with the most amazing, loving man who is my biggest culinary supporter. I could barely boil water when we first met! I've been cooking for about seven years and while I don't have the utter obsession with it that I had for several years, I still like to make dinner every night :)
My favorite things to cook
In the summer I really enjoy cooking an entire meal on the grill. I also prefer dishes that I can take my time with. I love the stirring, chopping, sauteeing, etc.... stir-fries are too hectic for me!
My cooking triumphs
Cooking in itself is a triumph for me! Until several years ago I lived on bagels and Lean Cuisines... then I found AllRecipes and I can hold my own in the kitchen now!
