Angel Food Cake I

Reviewed: Jan. 5, 2001
I thought that this cake would have come out completely different. I cooked it for one hour and it was a beautiful golden brown, but when i went to take it out of the pan (besides it sticking to everything!) it looked as though it could have cooked 10 more minutes. Taking the cake out of the pan was a completely different story. It looked like I let my son take it out of the pan with his hands!

Chinese Restaurant Almond Cookies

Reviewed: Feb. 15, 2010
After reading EVERY review I decided to make these cookies using butter and crisco (I had never cooked with lard before so why start now right?). While the cookie came out quite tasty, it was far from authentic. If you are going for authenticity you absolutely MUST use lard, yellow food coloring (10 drops) and egg wash for the tops of the cookies. Once you roll the cookies into 1 inch balls - DO NOT use your hands to flatten cookies (the egg wash will sink into the grooves placed by your fingers and the result will be a striped cookie), use a small glass or other cookie flattening object. I flattened mine to about 1/4 inch. When egg washing, be sure to only do the tops and not the sides. 325 degrees for 20 minutes was perfect. The cookies came out nice and crisp. I also found that the next day they tasted even better!

Split Pea and Ham Soup I

Reviewed: Mar. 28, 2011
Great recipe. I made this a couple of times soaking and not soaking the peas. I will always soak the beans overnight from now on. The soup tasted so much better.

Sweet Potato Pie I

Reviewed: Jun. 18, 2011
First time eating and preparing a sweet potato pie. I do not have anything to compare it to but it was delish! I took other reviewers suggestions and added 2 tsp fresh lemon juice, 3tbs flour to thicken, 1/2c brown sugar, 1/2c white sugar and substituted evaporated milk for milk. I used 3 large sweet potatoes and it was the perfect amount. I also found the potatoes to be very "stringy" so I pushed them through a mesh strainer before combining with the other ingredients. Even my 10 year old son loved this pie - will make again. Thanks for a great recipe.

Fudgy Brownies I

Reviewed: May 29, 2011
This is NOT a fudgy brownie recipe, nor did it taste anything like a brownie. I would say at best the texture is a cross between cake like and fudgy - with it being more cake like than anything. I left out the baking soda and cooked it for less time and they still came out the way I did NOT want them too. My quest continues for a fudgy brownie recipe. :o(

Sweet Restaurant Slaw

Reviewed: Apr. 4, 2011
Awesome 'slaw! This was my first time attempting to make coleslaw and it came out great. It was good the night I made it and even better the next day. I ran out of onions so I used onion powder instead, mayo instead of miracle whip, olive oil instead of vegetable oil, triple the vinegar, 1/3 c sugar and omitted poppy seeds. My ten year old who hates coleslaw ate two helpings - definitely a keeper! Thank you!

Fool proof recipe. You can't screw this one up! This has been the same recipe used in our family since I was a kid. We change up the spice mixture to our liking. Delish! Don't forget the whipped cream!

Hong Kong Style Egg Tarts

Reviewed: Jan. 23, 2012
While the cookie base would make a great cookie, it is most definitely NOT great for the crust of an egg tart. The egg custard center is anything but. I was looking for smooth and velvety custard, but this recipe (followed to a T) resulted in scrambled egg tasting custard that was clumpy when cut into. I will search elsewhere for a truely authentic egg tart recipe.

Campbell's® Green Bean Casserole

Great basic green bean casserole recipe. You can do so many things with this - add cheese, fresh mushrooms, fresh green beans and the list goes on and on. We love this recipe with extra french fried onions and french cut green beans.

Connie's Zucchini "Crab" Cakes

Reviewed: May 20, 2011
Eh not bad will have to tweak the recipe a bit. There was too much breading to this recipe and it tasted more like a stuffing than a "crab" cake.

Amish White Bread

Reviewed: Nov. 16, 2011
This is phenominal. I made my first loaf of white bread Sunday using another recipe and it was okay. I made my second and third loaves of bread yesterday (whole wheat) and they were okay too. I made this recipe today (using my Bosch stand mixer) and it is so delicious - we ate half of one loaf already. If you have not made this yet, you must! Thanks for a great recipe.

Roast Sticky Chicken-Rotisserie Style

WOWZERS! Awesome recipe. My chicken came out moist and juicy - everyone raved about it! I did find it to be a tad on the salty side, so I will cut back on it next time. No more store bought roasters for us, I will use this recipe from now on. Thanks a lot!
