Condensed Milk Chocolate Frosting

Reviewed: Jun. 24, 2013
This is my new favorite frosting recipe. It was thick, yummy, easy, and doesn't require a huge amount of powdered sugar and butter. Sweetened condensed milk comes out of the can very thick, and when you cook it, it gets even thicker. As you cook and stir it, the condensed milk starts sticking to the sides of the pan....keep stirring, and you will know when the consistency is right. It took me about 7 minutes, but that is a bit variable depending on cookware, range temp, etc. Adding the water at then end made the mixture smoother without watering it down. What you are doing here is basically making a soft candy. The best part of this recipe is that you can spread it while it is warm (not hot) on to a warm cake, and it doesn't run. For me, this made a very thick icing that I probably could have piped with had I let it cool all the way. **Because sweetened condensed milk is already thick and gooey when you open the can, reviews describing something being watery should be ignored. Most likely those cooks used evaporated milk or tried to substitute regular milk, which is watery in the can. There isn't any possible way to take a can of sweetened condensed milk and cook it until it is watery---there isn't any science behind that.

Hot Buttered Rum Batter

Reviewed: Dec. 17, 2007
This is fabulous! I emailed this recipe to every person I know. I could eat the batter by itself, it is so good. As for a hot buttered rum drink, I don't typically like rum at all, but I swoon over this drink. Highly recommend this recipe.

Classic Yorkshire Pudding

Reviewed: Dec. 17, 2007
This did not turn out for me. I tried to serve it with the Rock Salt Prime Rib from this site, which prevents the use of pan drippings. So I used bacon drippings as the recipe instructs are a viable option. My pudding didn't rise even the tiniest bit, and it tasted like bacon! I may try again with a roast, and will update my review if I get better results.

Rock Salt Roast Prime Rib

Reviewed: Dec. 17, 2007
There are so many good reviews for this recipe, I had very high hopes. However, mine turned out very poorly. The salt/mustard never formed any type of crust. I actually had to hold my prime rib under the faucet to wash the salt off. The meat tasted fine, but just as it would have if I had roasted it without doing anything special. Doubtful I will try it.

Vinegar Pie II

Reviewed: Nov. 7, 2007
This didn't turn out for me well for me at all. I found the flavor to be too egg-y. Even with the spices, the pie smelled like eggs. Perhaps someone else will have better luck.

Kielbasa with Brussels Sprouts

Reviewed: Nov. 6, 2007
This was great! I made it in an attempt to get more variety in to our vegetable diet, and to my delight my entire family raved about it. I served it over egg noodles and with a salad on the side. It's a great cool-weather, down-home meal. I will definitely make this again.

Grandmother's Buttermilk Cornbread

Reviewed: Oct. 28, 2007
This cornbread is fabulous, sweet and moist. I've been making it for a couple of years now, and it is my go-to cornbread recipe. No tweaks to the recipe needed. I have an oven-ready skillet, and I mix everything in the one pan and pop it in the oven.
