About this Cook
I read cookbooks like some people read novels. I enjoying finding recipes and preparing them for my family. Thank goodness for my wonderful husband and children who are (almost) always willing to try something new. I have found some great recipes on Allrecipes.com, but it took me several years to finally became a member. Now I'm adding another step to my cooking hobby - reviewing!
My favorite things to cook
Favorite things to cook? Just about anything!
My favorite family cooking traditions
In my family we have a saying - "Nothing says Christmas like hot wings!" Lately though our saying goes more like - "Nothing says (insert holiday here) like hot wings!" Seems we're always coming up with an excuse to make them. There's nothing better than the whole family in the kitchen contributing to a wonderful meal. It makes for good times and good eating.
My cooking triumphs
I had 8 people from out of town stay at my house, in addition to my family of 5. I had to keep them entertained, be a good housekeeper, and provide 3 meals a day for 4 days. I had a lot of people to help, but I didn't want to rely on that. With a little planning I was able to prepare large amounts of food with minimal time, money, and effort. And I never lost the wow factor at any meal!
My cooking tragedies
Honestly, I don't remember this, but my husband does. While we were dating, many of our meals were homemade either by him or by me. He tells me I made a dish one night that made him think twice about whether I could possibly "be the one." Thankfully I had many more opportunities to prove my skills in the kitchen and eventually won him over!

Spicy Shrimp and Grits
This was just okay for me as I prefer a more traditional Shrimp and Grits. The grits were a perfect consistency going into the oven but came out rather watery. If you let it cool before serving (hot grits are like hot lava!) they thicken up well. I drained the tomatoes and then added chicken broth to make 4 cups liquid for the grits.

Low-Fat Cream of Tomato Soup
It can be dangerous to put hot liquid in a blender. I blend mine first and then put it on the stove to heat.

French Spring Soup
This was very good and I will make it again; however, if you look at the ingredients there is no seasoning other than some salt. It was very very bland (and I had even replaced half the water with chicken broth!). I suggest, at the very least, adding garlic, lots and lots of pepper, and more salt at the end. I also added the juice of half a lemon. For me, topping it with some grated parmesan made it.
