About this Cook
I'm slowly losing my sweet tooth and I'm pretty sad about that because I love to bake. We moved to Seattle 6 months ago and I'm really digging that I can find just about every ingredient my heart desires.
My favorite things to cook
I love to bake and lately have found joy in making bread and jellies. I also love all the work that goes into preparing a meal, the more I have to chop and mince, the better. People are always looking for some special tool to help them out but a little extra work can only make the meal tastier.
My favorite family cooking traditions
At christmas my father-in-law makes a boneless rib roast that is out of this world! They also make scrapple which is one of the best things I've ever eaten.
My cooking triumphs
I made a pecan pie that I took over to a girlfriend's house and one of the girl's there said it was the best pecan pie she had ever had, and she said she never had one as good living down south.
My cooking tragedies
When I find a new recipe that I think sounds delicious and is anything but delicious.

Chinese Restaurant Almond Cookies
I made these this afternoon. I used my stand mixer to mix the dough, which definitely was a must. I used half lard, half unsalted butter because I didn't have enough lard. I then rolled them into balls and rolled them in a spiced sugar mixture. I used the bottom of a drinking glass to flatten them. These are wonderful!

Refried Beans Without the Refry
This is an excellent way to save money and use the beans sitting in the cupboard. These are tastier than what comes out of the can and much healthier.

Buttermilk Syrup
This is a wonderfully, buttery, sinfully good syrup! The first time I made it I cooked it a bit too long and over too high of heat. But each time since I have had nothing but delicious syrup. It is so very simple! It goes wonderful with buttermilk pancakes. No need to butter your pancakes before pouring this syrup!
