My Family
About this Cook
I am happily married with four great kids. I help my husband run several businesses which takes most of my time, but I really love the outdoors - boating, skiing, swimming, four wheeling, hiking. Also a huge Utah Jazz fan. I love to travel - everywhere possible! I hit the gym early every morning, do volunteer work at church and in the schools, and read in my spare time. I am quickly getting addicted to allrecipes.com!
My favorite things to cook
Everything! I'm not a big dessert person, except homemade cookies.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I think family dinner is important but becoming obsolete in our society. I try to make dinner from scratch, with the table nicely set, as many nights a week as possible. Difficult with everything our big family is involved in, but the payoff is worth it! We often have "extras" at our table - friends, neighbors, whoever is around when it's time to eat. (I'm not sure it is always a "coincidence" they are around at dinner time!) It is a happy, bonding time when our kids will open up and talk.
My cooking tragedies
Lots! My mom didn't cook much, so I am self-taught. You have to take risks to get better. Results are not always so good :)

Stephen's Chocolate Chip Cookies
Well I need another chocolate chip cookie recipe like I need a hole in my head! But this sounded interesting so I gave it a try. I made it exactly as written (it was such a sweet tribute to the author's Dad - I wanted to make it just the way she created it for him) The texture was absolutely perfect! I thought it would be too many nuts but the ratio is still the same so they were great. Also I don't even like white chocolate chips but I enjoyed them in combo with everything else. Thanks for sharing this :-)

The Way to a Man's Heart
Awesome!! My family (and guests) unanimously voted this on the "keeper" list-which doesn't happen very often! I substituted shallots for onions, and added some large chopped shrimp. I made in advance and then heated for maybe 20 mins covered in the oven, then uncovered for the last 5 mins. It was very rich, even with low fat milk. Served with just a green salad and hot sourdough bread-really nice Sunday evening meal on a cold night. :-)

Asian Coconut Rice
This was a really good recipe, but not worth all the fat grams! I used low-fat coconut milk, and topped it off with toasted coconut and toasted macadamia nuts. Everyone liked it, even the coconut-haters!
