I am a 45 year old grandmother of 4 gorgeous girls. As they grow I am teaching them the love of cooking by allowing them to be in the kitchen with me as I cook. My oldest is four and loves to stir, add things to the bowls and taste everything! One thing I do for them is save all of my empty spice bottles. I don't wash them out because they love to smell them. They use the different spices to cook their pretend meals.
My favorite things to cook
I love to bake but can cook most anything. The more ingredients the better. I like flavors and the shorter recipes sometimes just don't have enough.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I love making breakfast for my family. One of our favorite traditions is having breakfast casserole on Christmas morning. It's made the night before so it cooks while we open presents. Then we have a lovely breakfast before heading out. Another tradition is giving all the girls in my family a cookbook with blank pages. I usually fill out their favorite recipes that I make so that they can carry them down through their families as well.
My cooking triumphs
Two of my families favorites are my Sausage Gravy and Mel Faye Chicken. The sausage gravy is always requested and the bargaining for the last bit is too funny. I came up with the chicken recipe when I had nothing in the cabinets - just threw it together. All the girls now have this recipe in their books.
My cooking tragedies
The worst cooking tragedy was the Grit Muffins! I made what I thought were cornbread muffins. The grits and the cornmeal were both in canisters and were not marked. The muffins looked beautiful but as you can imagine, they did not taste well - quite crunchy.
