Cinnamon Butter Cookies

Reviewed: Jan. 27, 2005
I did not like these cookies. They're ok while eating them, but I found them to leave an unpleasant cinnamon-salty aftertaste. However, it could just be me. My husband liked them, so he took the remainder of the batch to work with him: 2 of his coworkers loved them so much they have asked for the recipe. My sister also declared them to be "yummy". I definately recommend frosting them, as the cookies themselves are not too sweet.

Wild Rice and Beef Casserole

Reviewed: Jan. 25, 2005
I followed this recipe with only a few minor alterations: fresh mushrooms and, since I didn't have water chestnuts, I threw in a cup of corn. It was mildly flavoured. Next time I would use a bit less butter. I will make this again as even my husband, who only likes white rice, went for seconds.

Pizza Muffins

Reviewed: Jan. 20, 2005
Very good and very pretty. I used 1 1/2 cups cheddar and 1 cup jalapeno havarti, because that's what I had on hand. (If only using cheddar next time, I will add some hot pepper flakes.) Next time I will add some garlic and a couple extra tomatoes. I will also use only 1 tablespoon of sugar. Using a standard muffin tin with "Large" size papers, I made 16 muffins (the batter filled the tins to about 2/3's full). Baked for 15 minutes, they were perfect.

Bran Flax Muffins

Reviewed: Jan. 10, 2005
Pretty good. I added a bit more spices, as suggested by another reviewer. Next time I would add even more. I left out the raisins, as we don't like them. If I make these again I will try dried cranberries. They are very dense muffins, as expected. I used Large size paper muffin cups: the recipe made 28 of these. Next time I will just use a non-stick muffin tin: if not completely cool, a lot of muffin sticks to the paper.

Garlic Lime Chicken

Reviewed: Jan. 9, 2005
This was good, but the garlic flavour wasn't strong enough for me. Mostly I could taste lime. My husband really liked it. I might make it again, but I would add more garlic & maybe some spices.

Black Pepper Beef and Cabbage Stir Fry

Yum! I added an onion and a thinly sliced carrot. Next time I will try using some ginger too. Will definately make again.

Baked Basil Fries

Reviewed: Jan. 5, 2005
I liked these; my husband loved them. We both shook on some salt, so I think next time I would up the garlic powder, or add some spicy seasoning. They smelled wonderful while cooking, but the flavour didn't match the aroma. I will definately make them again.

Skillet Pork Chops with Potatoes and Onion

Reviewed: Jan. 4, 2005
This tasted pretty good. It was salty, even though I used reduced salt boullion. I would leave out the added salt next time. I would also skip flouring the chops before browning. They didn't look very appetizing. I'll just whisk in a bit of flour towards the end of cooking. I will definately make this again, perhaps experiment with seasonings. I'll also try it in the oven, as suggested by Linda323.

Chocolate Yummies

Reviewed: Jan. 2, 2005
These are very yummy. Chewy crispie chocolate. I really liked the crunch of the crackers, but I was annoyed by their crumbling. I thought I'd try a graham cracker crust next time, although the crunch is a nice contrast to the chew! I used about 3 cups mini marshmallows to get a single layer covering the crackers. I put it in a 350F oven for 2-3 minutes, until the marshmallows were puffy. I will make these again for sure.

Turkey Pot Pie I

Reviewed: Jan. 2, 2005
I like this recipe for the basic proportions, although I did add extra broth (about 2/3 cup) as suggested. It was not dry. Next time I would also try the gravy on the side idea. I think it would be nice with the crust. (I used "Best Ever Pie Crust".) The seasoning was my problem. The oregano & parsley made it seem sweet for turkey. I will try sage & thyme next time.

Best Ever Pie Crust

Reviewed: Jan. 2, 2005
This was very flakey & tender. I used only 1/4 cup water, if that. (It was a dry, wintry day, too.) I rolled it out between 2 sheets of plastic. Next time I would use some butter, or maybe butter flavoured shortening, for flavour. I used it for a turkey pot pie. I will make it again, absolutely.

Harvest Yams

Reviewed: Dec. 27, 2004
Easy & good. My sister made this recipe when we were visiting: my husband requested it for Christmas dinner. I didn't have maple syrup, so I used corn syrup with maple extract. He said it tasted the same.

Gingerbread Cookies II

Reviewed: Dec. 22, 2004
Excellent soft gingerbread cookies. I have received many compliments!! I must have been using potent powdered ginger: unlike other reviewers, I found my cookies to have a hot ginger taste. As suggested by others, I doubled the cinnamon & added 1/2 tsp allspice. Next time I would leave the cinnamon at 1 tsp, to keep the ginger dominant. I used 1/2 cup shortening (all I had on hand) and 1/2 cup margarine. I did not notice a 'molasses taste'. I recommend rolling the dough out between 2 pieces of plastic wrap, rather than using a floured surface, to reduce the risk of dry cookies. Bake only until the cookies don't look wet. They will be sturdy but still soft when cool.

Onion, Garlic, Cheese Bread

Reviewed: Oct. 25, 2004
We were so disappointed! The flavour was ok, but not the texture. It didn't do well in my bread machine. I follwed the recipe. I'm not sure I'll bother trying it again.

Pumpkin Cake with Orange Glaze

Reviewed: Oct. 11, 2004
Moist & tasted just like pumpkin pie! I didn't add the raisins (we aren't raisin fans). I also used butter. I neglected to read the part about melting it; didn't seem to matter! I didn't use the glazes, so I can't rate them. I used Caramel Frosting VI. Next time I'll try a cream cheese frosting.

Caramel Frosting VI

Reviewed: Oct. 11, 2004
This tasted like brown sugar fudge: everyone thought so! It also has a sweet aroma. I followed the directions exactly. The first time I beat the frosting for 2 minutes. As soon as it left the pan and hit the cake it 'set', so I had to 'pat' it on in chunks. The second time, I beat it 1 1/2 minutes: it poured down my Pumpkin bundt cake and set very nicely in a thick glaze. Don't be fooled by the liquid/honey consistancy: it will start to set as soon as it leaves the hot pan. The only reason I gave it four stars, not five, is that it cracked and crumbled when the cake was cut. It was easy and very VERY yummy.... I'll make it again, I'm just not to sure for what!
